In response to the people who always say they must be drug tested to get a job, I've always been astounded by how many drug tests I took for retail, and how I have taken a total of zero for my actual, professional career (I'm a college professor).

That one cracks me up. My BIL had to pass a drug test for his part-time seasonal retail position. My husband hasn't had to take a drug test for any of his last three corporate positions. Anywhere I've worked only tested if you made a worker's comp claim.

"That's 37 people who should not be receiving taxpayer subsidies, because they are not behaving as they are supposed to," said state Rep. Glen Casada, a Republican from Franklin. "If the taxpayers are going to support you there are certain criteria you need to adhere to. This is a good use of taxpayer money."

But if you're a politician or a corporation you can have all the tax payer money you like, still do drugs, and basically fuck everyone else over constantly.

    Seems fair.

And Mr. Casada still gets paid despite passing and supporting clearly unconstitutional legislation. Doesn't sound like he is "behaving as he is supposed to."

Well, if it actually wound up saving states money, I'd kind of (maybe?) agree with the whole "I need a drug test for a job why don't you need one for welfare" mentality. If you can't afford to feed your children you can't afford drugs, and this program has clearly proven that people who need welfare already know that... now if only repubs could admit they were wrong and drop it I wouldn't care that the experiment took place.

As a slogan, sure, that makes sense. As reality? Not so much. Addiction is a bitch that won't be cured by hurting kids even more.

Ya, it didn't pan out, and instead of admitting that and ending the program to save taxpayer dollars, they shifted their argument from saving taxpayer dollars to punishing the children of a handful of drug users.

Not to mention in Florida, Rick Scott co-founded one of the companies used to do the drug testing. He divested himself when he was elected... by putting the shares in a trust in his wife's name. So, no conflict of interest there, obviously. In this case, at least, it's not only because he hates poor people.

      yes exactly!!

And hungry children underperform at school. And then because of that drop out and then bam they are part of the regressive poverty trap.

These old white men making these crap decisions are living in fucking la la land.

Right? It's like my grand-dad always said, "if you take so much as one toke of marijuana, your whole family should starve." Seems fair and just . . .

But how do we know that they were using taxpayer funds to buy their drugs? If they could prove they were trading blow jobs for meth, then would Rep Casada give them back their welfare?

I would hope so.. unless they were blowing politicians. In which case, is it bribing? I don't know. Too complicated. I just wanted to say I was a responsible citizen that payed for her own drugs.

"not only did the program end up costing the state more than they would have paid out in benefits to people who failed the test"

This shit irks the hell out of me. The party of fiscal responsibility supports this. Why do people vote for republicans? How do people vote for a group whose every belief is wrong?

I'm so embarrassed by Tennessee. I hate that they are such morons. They are following the Koch brothers down the line. By the way, you should run the story about how they've just changed the gun laws so you can carry a gun in your car without a permit. They are so, so stupid.
