I wonder what it is like to have all of your success be hinged on the fact that you have to consistently endure humiliations that are "a part of the game" in order to make some assholes millions of dollars. It's not that there isn't a law, it's that if they don't show up for pretty pictures they won't get work at other studios because they won't play the publicity game.

I think the better question is why our society is creating all these papparazzi style reporters in the first place and why we've created an oversized demand for this kind of inanity.

The oversized demand for this kind of inanity is what enables those in the entertainment industry to make such vast amounts of money in the first place.

Nobody "has to" do any of this. Celebrities do this because they want the perks that come with being a celebrity. I encourage them all to not do any of this!

Dude, you just totally described my job! No one's handing me gowns and jewels, or goody bags worth hundreds of thousands of dollars as I turn in the last spreadsheet of the day.

There's another possibility as well: they could walk the red carpet and either laugh or snark at inane questions from the likes of E! bots. However, if they openly rebelled against this accepted status quo, they would probably be branded "difficult to work with" and "uncooperative", further affecting their chances of landing the lucrative contracts. I mean, just look at the way Kristen Stewart is written about because she doesn't smile enough. If, on top of that, she talked back, they would probably ban her altogether.

Kristen Stewart should be banned because she sucks, not because she doesn't smile enough.

Unfortunately that horse has left the barn long ago. The fashion industry would revolt if they all avoided the runway. Zac Posen would literally immolate himself on Seventh Avenue if that happened.

The red carpet is a lucrative industry now. If Julianne Moore doesn't want to play ball, she shouldn't have to. But there are plenty of walking clothes hangars who would fall over themselves to shill for a designer.

Julianne Moore is a serious actor who can do whatever she likes and still work though, while most of the women who walk the carpet are more dependent on their "celebrity brand". If they don't appear in the rags, that brand atrophies, and there are always fresh new models ready to fill that spot.

On the one mani-cammed hand, they often get these dresses and jewels gratis from designers so they should be shouting their names from their limo windows. But they are simply demanding that they be asked more serious questions about their profession. They are presumed to be skilled at their jobs and deserve better than "how many cleanses did you have to do in order to fit into that gown" etc. And then finally, they are asked these inane questions and instructed to twirl on command while the men, who are there for the same reasons, are not. C'mon, I feel like you're trolling us here Hamilton. This is feminism 101.

except that all the men wear basically the same thing. Women have more clothing options for these. I mean, I think they do a who's suit/tux looks better post show. But that's about all you got for men.

Also men don't get the kind of designer attention that women do, and not as many goodies

Yeah I think this is some sort of weird attempt to troll the Jezzie types, as I find it hard to believe that Hamilton could be this tone deaf when it comes to equality? I kept expecting to see some suggest that male celebrities should also stay off the red carpet as some sort of solidarity with the women, but nope...just completely ignored that women are treated like empty headed bimbos wearing pretty clothes while the men get far more questions about their careers and meaningful causes they participate in.

I completely agree with you. This "line in the sand" attitude about the mani-cam (which is, admittedly, a ridiculous contraption) makes no sense because the rationale is "men aren't asked to show their hands." While this is true, that hardly suggests that men are grilled equally about what and who they are wearing be it formal wear or accessories. Female celebrities are still poked and prodded and questioned in far more detail than their male counterparts.

It seems like the real objection is to a close-up of their hands, one of those body parts where age doesn't lie.

I wonder if the red-carpet deal is something contractually obligated by studios hoping to promote their movies/TV shows as part of their publicity arrangements. Like, if Dakota Johnson doesn't want to walk a red carpet but her bosses want her to promote 50 Shades, can she get out of it?

Working the pole to promote their movies and other projects is definitely part of the deal these celebrities make, contract or no. If you're big enough, you have leeway to dictate the terms in a manner favorable to your situation. The rest of them, though, need to learn to suck it up and dance.

It, without a doubt, is. An actress would be putting herself in danger of not booking jobs if she just didn't walk the red carpet.

If you're Meryl Streep, you can do whatever. But aside from her, Helen Mirren, and maybe someone like Julianne Moore? You'd be putting your career in serious danger. There is always some shiny young thing in Hollywood, waiting to take your place.

But then, isn't the runway game kind of a tradeoff for the actor/celebrity lifestyle? It's not as if they're researching cancer cures, or running a farm, or even having to get up at 5 in the morning to go to a boring job they hate just so that they can cover a minimally middle class lifestyle. Considering how 99% of the population makes a living, acting a pretty sweet gig. I have to walk past a gauntlet of co-workers asking idiot questions every morning, and I don't get a free fancy dress and jewelry out of the deal.

Agreed- and I have those same thoughts when I read about famous actors- George Clooney comes to mind- who are angry about their privacy being violated. I always want to say, Dude, you sell your image on movie screens for gazillions of dollars and you want gazillions of people to come see your movies; you sold your privacy rights long ago.

I do think there's a difference between runway appearances and nosy paparazzi, though. If you're on the red carpet at a major public event, having your picture taken and your outfit scrutinized is part of the package (I don't hear a lot of them griping about those sweet gift bags they get, though). Chasing people down the street as they try to go to the store or take their kids to the park is a different issue entirely.

The issue is that while you wrote that ALL celebrities this unofficial contract ONLY the females have the camera panning up and down their bodies. Only the females are asked to shove their hands in front of a camera(fuck that I want to see Johnny Depps rings). Men are not asked to twirl to show off their incredible tuxes. Women are asked the stupid question(Amal Clooney fights injustice on the worldwide level but George gets the awards and asked serious questions about his career).

You just reinforced Nolan's point; don't walk the red carpet at all if that twirling and questioning and objectification is really the objection.

But they are contractually obligated to do things like walk the red carpet. Yes, they could choose not to be in successful movies at all, but supporting a film during award season is not something they can just choose not to do.

Yes, they get incredible amounts of free stuff, but think of all the hard work it takes. They have to stand in place and answer questions, then go inside and have a free meal while people hand them trophies.
