    • The "Atkins v. Virginia" case referred to in the letter is a 2002 Supreme Court ruling that executing the mentally retarded violates the Eighth Amendment, but left it up to states to define who is mentally retarded.

FTFY before some new dolt comes in here crying about how this execution "violates federal law."

Yes, it left it up to states, which some would consider to be a weakness, since it results in executions like this, and like Warren Hill's recent execution in Georgia.

I'm endlessly confused by these. Prior to reading any of these letters, I was definitely anti-death penalty. But all the I found god, I'm forgiven, I didn't really do it, blah blah blah makes it hard to shed tears at their execution. It's barbaric and on a legal level, I'm against it. But these letters bring me closer to being pro-death penalty than anything else!!

It's a given that all of these murderers are mentally unsound individuals, whether it be intellectual disabilities or psychopathy/narcissism that makes them completely incapable of having a conscience. The question is not whether these people are despicable, but whether the state should stoop down to their level in the name of "justice." Pretty much the entire Western world, aside from the U.S., has decided that the death penalty is barbaric, and, to me, the death penalty reflects poorly on the U.S. as a whole.

I don't see how anyone can justify the US system of state-sponsored killing in what amounts to a spirit of retribution while simultaneously condemning other nations (like Saudi Arabia) for doing the same fucking thing. Just because you think our version is somehow more honorable or our methods more just? State-sponsored killing is state-sponsored killing, regardless of how you try to dress it up and re-frame the narrative to fit your personal feelings of justice and divine retribution.

Not to mention racist state-sponsored killing. What these commenters calling for his blood fail to understand is that you are over 20 times more likely to be given the death penalty if you are black the victim is white. It disgusts me that we disproportionately execute black people, given our countries history of slavery, lynching, Jim Crow, etc.

I'm an atheist so I obviously don't believe there is any god at all, but I would MUCH prefer the kind of god that would NOT forgive someone who did such horrific things while alive than the kind of god who forgives anyone and anything just for saying "Yeah I believe in you." What the FUCK kind of god is that? And what does he or she inspire in anyone if the only thing you have to do is believe.

Right?? I do think it's harder to be an atheist sometimes. First what you said, whatever I do, it's on me alone. But second, all that promise of heaven if you really believe that stuff, that sounds awesome. I'd love to really think that is what happens when you die! Alas, it makes no sense to me. No more than Santa and the Tooth Fairy being real. And finally, I'd love to think everything that happened in life was someone's PLAN. But at the same time, I don't know how anyone rationalizes the horrible things that happen as someone's plan and find themselves okay with that. I know two religious people who have had a child die. There is NO WAY I could believe that was my god's plan for my child to die. The idea of that makes me more sick than comforted.

I really really hate this series. It's one thing if these letters actually showed someone who might have a reasonable claim to be innocent or someone who has accepted their punishment, but almost all of these are from people who are in denial about the horrors they caused, and it's a shame that families of the victims have to deal with an media organization as big as Gawker giving these assholes a soapbox to spew bullshit.
