I wish I had a soft copy of this but I have a photo of police-women in Sicily walking around in high heels.

      I would expect nothing less.

"...all women who have graduated from middle and high school to undergo mandatory military service" Interesting. Because not many women in North Korea can continue their educations to that level. I know I'm linking a long, full-length, highly disturbing documentary here. But it's really worth the watch. The people featured have all escaped NK and this includes women who discuss their lives and experiences, including the treatment of education outside the elite richer folk. This is from '09.

TW: All the reasons you'd assume.

This is a really excellent/morbidly fascinating documentary. I believe it's also on Netflix.

Oh is it? I didn't know! I hope so. It's probably my favorite doc. I've seen on the subject. I love the emphasis on survivor perspective. Very sad, very informative.

Israel is not as poor as North Korea, and does not rely on the earning power of women as much as North Korea. As I understand it, the women of North Korea are the ones who are primarily keeping the (black market) economy going. Even though men have government jobs, they aren't paid or aren't paid very well, and they aren't allowed to quit to find better employment. Up until now, women's time was more under their own control than for men, which allowed them to find ways to earn money and support their families. Even though their military service will be shorter than men's, the loss of their income during those years will be an economic blow to North Korean families.

This is great news! North Korea's Threat Level will decrease significantly as they'll be busy dealing with Lady Problems In The Military.

Or maybe it's awful news? Because Hysterical Ladies With Guns is never a good thing.

There is a lot of equality in this article, unfortunately is not the good type.

Involvement in the conscription process being an equal requirement for both genders?

What a shame America isn't as advanced.

I'm so sickly fascinated with the human rights atrocity that is this country. Also does this mean women will now be allowed to wear pants?

that's just an old law from the 70's that is hardly enforced. There are loads of photos of women in trousers. I think maybe in pyongyang you're more likely to see "progressive" (as progressive as it can get there) ideals but as you go into smaller cities, the trouser law might be a bit more important?
