            Is the first golden retriever watching a HD stream of the tennis as it goes on? Then the first dog could be seeing and hearing the ball and reacting to it, almost chasing it across the screen, while the other retriever is aware that it's not a real ball and just chilling in the corner in the meantime.

              The thing is, it's not so much that he is aware of the fact that it's not a real ball as it is that he isn't even aware of the picture on the tv.

              The way I've heard it explained is that dogs know us more by our scent and voice than by sight, and they react more to the outlines of things and how they move than to visual details.

              One dog just sees a big black rectangle that doesn't smell like anything, so he doesn't react to it. The other dog, however, is aware of movement on the screen and is watching the ball.

              The dog watching the tv is most likely the more intelligent dog. Just my two cents.
