Were cameras allowed in the courtroom? I think it would be kind of nice to see their faces as the jury reads the verdict.

Oh god I would love that. LOVE that.

I mean they'll probably only serve a few months (It's just rape, it's not like narcotics possession!) but still, I love seeing assholes get punished for violating others.

Awful human beings finally getting what they deserve!

Also: "Quesadilla". They based their defense on the spelling of the word "Quesadilla". Fucking idiots. Hope they rot prison.

I read that the victim graduated with a degree in neuroscience and is now in a PhD program out of state. I hope she recovers from this ordeal and has a great productive career and happy life full of love. I hope that this traumatic event doesn't define her....that she doesn't blame herself....that she gets appropriate counseling and that she can have fulfilling, consensual sexual relationships with awesome feminist people. I don't blame her for wanting to remain unnamed, but it would be amazing to see a profile on her someday as a way for sticking it to these guys....you dehumanized and assaulted a human being and now she is a neuroscience PhD. Ha!

a million times over.... They will rot in jail minimum 10 years (according to another poster) and she will have ten years to have a fucking amazing life. Having been a rape victim (but not having gone through anything like that) I know it stays with you forever no matter how much therapy you have. But I hope she and her degree just rock this world! GO GIRL!

Good for her. I'm glad to hear that she is able to move ahead with her life in a positive manner. I sincerely hope that the verdict in this case brings her some sense of vindication and closure. I know that there is still another trial for the two other scumbags who were involved, but maybe they'll plead out after seeing how swimmingly things went for their dudebros and we can all forget that these animate piles of shit ever even existed.

the same people who think this dude was "too drunk" to commit rape think that drunk women deserve to get raped. I'm so glad that he was convicted.

I don't know where to put this for comment.

have a weird "rape culture" observation from a conversation with a coworker, whom I am just beginning to get to know. He is divorced with a 16 YO son. Our HR manager (woman) is also divorced with a 16 YO son. He relayed the following to me (paraphrased). HR manager not present.

he: "Over the holidays, when I got to see my son, he asked me to get him condoms.

Me: Wow. Good thing he is thinking of everyone's safety (There are no little Lou children, but there are nieces and nephews, so I pay attention to such discussions)

he: I talked to him a lot about sex and how anticlimactic it can be. Like Christmas - it is on your mind for weeks and then the 25th hits, and by 9am it is all over, and you are a bit disappointed because it is all over at once. It is best to just take things as they come He doesn't have a girlfriend now, so I didn't want him to think that his first date was about sex or a one night stand. (I found this rather enlightened, and had hope)

He continues: I talked about it with (Ms HR manager) and she said "yeah - the girls are really aggressive these days"

Me: Spoken: She said THAT?! (Internal - 1. Why would you share anything personal with HR and 2. I always knew her moral compass was broken. Wish she was not raising a boy.)

He: That is what my ex would say too.... Mom's are protective of their boys.

      Me: Unspoken (What?).

Can I get feedback here for future niece/nephew reference?

I know that there is still a huge debate (among some people at least) regarding whether rape is about sex vs. power. Is this finally going to be the case that puts that debate to rest?

I mean, how can you possibly fucking argue that someone uses a water bottle to penetrate another human being to get sexual pleasure? (Of course, I'm pretty damn vanilla, so I don't always understand what gets consenting yes CONSENTING adults get off on, but yanno. She was fucking UNCONSCIOUS! NOT ABLE TO CONSENT!)

I just.....I mean. Reading the charges was fucking heartbreaking and they are just like, the minimum legal description of what they actually did. They don't adequately convey the horror of what these ass faces actually did to another human being. I can't look at that list and think this was about anything less than an attempt to totally and completely humiliate someone to the point that their humanity was stripped away.

If these guys had wanted sex, I bet they could have found a consenting women to have sex with. This was about degradation, pure and simple. I hate that I am thankful that they were found guilty because it feels like I'm celebrating something that should be the expected result to any horror show of this magnitude. And yet, I'm surprised. So surprised that I'm rage rambling....typing. Whatever. I'm rage typing now.

But please, no prison rape jokes or wishes anybody. Just, can we not do that? Can we not sink to that level, no matter how outraged we are? Kthxbai.

Yep. If they wanted to have sex with the acts described above, they STILL could have found a consenting participant. Those people exist!

This was definitely not about sex.

People who think rape is about sex are the same people who think frat house rapists are just "confused". And if I see one more "if they were both drunk then who raped who?" comment I'm going to lose my mind.

People feel happy in a scenario where people who committed rape got exactly what they deserved in a court of law. What, you think the rape victim isn't just the least bit happy her rapists will be serving time?

In Tennessee, aggravated rape is a Class A felony, which incurs a fine of up to $50,000, at least 15 (and up to 60) years in prison, or both. That's 15 years per count.

If they're lucky, they'll get the statutory minimum of 15 years on each count to run concurrently. In which case they could theoretically get out in a decade. In theory. And, of course, the judge could always suspend the sentence. In theory.

If they're unlucky and the judge runs rampant on them to make an example of them, the judge could max them out and order the sentences to run consecutively. In which case, they'll never see the light of day again. I really don't want them to get lucky.

In summary, you know you're good and fucked when you hope that the judge will sentence you to ONLY 15 years.

      ETA the math:

      15 - 60 x 5 = 15 - 60 if concurrent and 75 - 300 if consecutive. Additionally, the aggravated sexual battery counts are 8 - 30 each, adding either 8 - 30 or 16 - 60.

The ultimate maximum sentence - maxing on each count with sentences to run consecutive - is 360 years ("out" in 2/3 with good behavior). They wouldn't be eligible for parole for 240 years.
