Right now Russia is suffering from sanctions, but the West is fooling itself if it thinks that will be enough to stop Russia. Russia is all in on Ukraine. It cannot afford to come away empty-handed. If Ukraine does not receive some kind of material assistance, either significant subsidies or personnel, Ukraine will not win this fight. So that's the decision facing the West: intervene on Ukraine's side, and make absolutely clear that the objective isn't merely peace, but peace on the West's terms, or resign themselves to long-term Russian domination in Donbass and the brazen conquest of Crimea.

We'll be hearing more from the plucky Donetsk Peoples' Republic in the news.
Military Communism always makes for turgid press releases.

Peace, riiiight. As Ukrainian government was signing peace offer, at the same time it initiated a 5th conscription for both women and men (unprecedented in Ukraine, since it's still pretty misogynistic). So current Ukrainian gouverment never wanted peace. Most refugees from these region leave to Russia due to omnipresent bigotry, now promoted by the new government. So there are no saints in this conflicts. Putin is an opportunist, but current party at power does nothing to unite Ukrainians by making sure that anyone who's not "pure blood Ukrainian" feels the uncomfortable and fearful of new people in power.

Current Ukrainian gouvernement is sanctifying fascist Bandera, who's organization murdered 70000 polish children, women and men, and that without counting jews, and anyone ukrainian anti-Bandera, does not abode well for any minority in the country.

There are no saints, but Russia is sure as hell the bigger sinner here, though I do like your casual use of "fascist Bandera."

      Bro, do you even Maidan?

"It was pure illusion that peace could be achieved now," Enrique Menendez, who runs a humanitarian relief operation in eastern Ukraine told the Times.

Tell me, (and I have started drinking earlier than usual today), I expected a slavic name in Eastern Ukraine, is this quote sort of made up by the Times? It is war and propaganda and I do not trust journos these days

There are expats and immigrants living in Ukraine. I know of a dentist who immigrated from Palestine years ago, and there's quite a lot of people like him, where they came as students and stayed. Several companies have a lot of expats working. Kids are born from mixed student marriages. This is why the rise of bigotry is so terrible, it's splitting country and facilitating the war. Basically it's a power struggle between government factions, using ugly nationalism that divides people and help the rise of anarchy.

Thanks, the name sort of stood out, it was sort of out of place. It is sad what is happening in Ukraine, it is a multinational country (I have just done research it has Jews, Hungarians, Romanians, Romani, Russians, Moldavians and Ukrainians among others), it cannot survive bigotry and it needs unfiying leaders to achieve its potential.
