As much as I am totally in favor of eating the rich, Greene is absolutely right that American Consumerism will destroy the world and us Serfs are at least partially responsible for propping up the system. If we could just stop requiring a new smartphone, computer, car, etc. every two years the world would definitely be a better place. It's not precisely our fault that advertisers, investors and bankers are playing us for suckers, but c'mon, we all know we are being played, yet we continue to allow it and even encourage it.

      Perhaps.

But you have to agree that a Millionaire telling people making $40,000 a year that they should learn to live with less is a big, well...not the best look.

Somehow, I think he wouldn't be happy if he were taxed more requiring him to live with "less" of his millions.

Here's the rest of what he said:

"I'm remarkably long for my level of pessimism," he said. "Our economy is in deep trouble. We need to be honest with ourselves. We've had a realistic level of job destruction, and those jobs aren't coming back."

"My greatest worry for our country is that globalization and the exponential growth of technology which have destroyed millions of jobs already, will undoubtedly eliminate millions and millions more jobs during the next several years," he said. "Many manufacturing jobs that we lost will come back to the U.S., but most will be filled by robots and software."

"I live in Palm Beach, where no one wants to hear bad news," he said. "We need to have an event where people aren't just focused on predicting the price of oil."

In this context, he sounds less "evil" and more honest. Let's face it: if our system continues on the way it is without any changes, he's probably correct.

True. But it's the wealthy that have to change and have the power to fix the side effects of globalization . We're not greedy and stupid for wanting a decent quality of life.

If automation is making full employment at 40 hours a week unsustainable, we need shorter work weeks, higher pay, and a minimum guaranteed income. That's going to mean higher taxes on the rich. That's going to mean that corporate boards and major shareholders need to stop expecting ever growing profits.

The wealthy need to choose. Do they take a smaller piece of the pie in the name of continued economic and political stability? Or do they revert to the medieval lord lifestyle of constant instability and war and living in fortresses so that they won't be killed by angry peasants?

Eh, here in Northern California we have an abundance of multi-millionaires who love to tell everyone to "Simplify, man!" Now who wants breakfast at Chez Panisse?

What gets me is all the talk of 'awareness', but then they've been browsing on the ipad in the volvo with the engine running for the last half hour, shortly before yanking it into traffic with no turn signal, late for yoga practice. They navigate the supermarket just like they drive, too.

Did he then set fire to a massive pyramid of cash, Joker-style?

Did he follow it up with a proposal that everyone with at least a seven figure income has to pay 90% income tax?

Did he rip the designer suit off his back to reveal a Hanes T-shirt and blue jeans?

    No?

    Aw, I guess he's just a run-of-the-mill asshole, then.

In this article, this guy literally used the same "There is so much income inequality, that wolves will be in the streets because the poor people will be radicalized" tripe Hamilton uses to a make a living.

He is also giving all of his money away when he dies.

He also said Americans need to get used to a lesser standard of living, which is certainly true if we stay on the redistribution path we are on.

          What am I missing here?
