A NYPD officer had a nice, whiny Op-Ed in today's NYT as well that you guys may want to highlight.

My favorite part of that piece:

For the healing to begin, Mr. de Blasio must find a way to sound like he actually means it when he compliments us and to follow that up with concrete actions that demonstrate respect and true understanding.

Until then he’ll continue to be speaking to a lot of backs in blue.

      Is that a threat?

Oh there are so many gems. This one is particularly gag inducing.

They were like two shepherds guarding their flock, and they were brutally murdered for it.

This is consistent with their year-long campaign to undermine de Blasio and more evidence that the NYPD should be taken off his security detail and replaced by State troopers immediately. As I've mentioned before, there's a damn good reason the military wasn't charged with protecting the President and the same should hold true for a militarized police force.

The NYPD is bigger than the FBI and New York City ain't fucking Mayberry, we should stop acting otherwise.

Absolutely agreed. There is no way the NYPD can be trusted to actually protect him when officers are turning their backs on him. The NYPD is showing themselves to be a petty and immature organization, and the mayor should have a security detail that cannot be undermined by said organization.

Who would be the alternative security? I guess Private paid out of a discretionary fund. Or perhaps a plea to provide Secret Service. And I agree. The First Family should not be "protected" by the same people waging a political vendetta against them.

I mean why does anyone care? Is it 1992 again?

Things I care about with my elected officials: corruption, incompetence and wasting my damn time. Just about everything else, in a cliché New Yorker TV persona "Kahm on!"

I used to like the idea of cops — figure they were stalwart god'n'country types, looking to save the world from itself. Yesterday, walking home, I came across a couple of them. No doubt my face, which should never ever play poker, showed that this has changed. One of them said, "What's your problem?"

Me, in an admittedly really shitty tone of voice: "You're not the boss of the look on my face."
Them: Silence, with fuck-you look on faces.
Credit where it's due, they didn't kill me. But then again, I am white.

Hey can we get at least a sentence stating that NYC is still really stuck in labor issues with some of the larger officer unions?

For real, every time there is something about de blasio, NYPD, whatever, it really should be mentioned.

Cause, you know, fuck you pay me.

Yeah NYC is a shit show on expired union contracts, and de Blasio was elected with lots and lots of teacher union money. It's not like most of the unions are feeling warm and fuzzy, except maybe the teachers.

To folks who can't grasp nuance and see everyone who breaks any crime as being cut from the same cloth, this probably seems brilliant.

If he actually did smoke, and the police knew enough to leak that he does...why would they NOT arrest him? They hate him so much it seems like the logical conclusion.

You should probably elaborate on what your sources have told you instead of hiding behind the word "rumors." I have to assume your anonymous sources don't have first-hand knowledge of DeBlasio currently using pot, which leads me to ask why this is worth reporting. (Fishing for real sources, maybe?)

Of course, no one really cares in this case, because it's fairly easy to believe that DeBlasio has smoked pot sometime relatively recently. It confirms the common political caricature of him: a bleeding heart liberal, etc. (Gawker's previous post on this topic relies on a photo of a young DeBlasio looking very much like a college stoner.) So my guess is that the rumors are generally easy to believe, and that for most Gawker readers they don't really impugn DeBlasio's character in any truly dramatic way.

Still, can't Gawker actually provide some insight here? I have to ask, because (i) this is an article that reports rumors that appear to be based on second-hand knowledge (ii) without explaining what the reporter's sources actually knew; and that also (iii) reports that the mayor has been dogged by rumors, but cites only a previous Gawker post, (iv) which itself only cites another Gawker post that is a mere solicitation for leads (and the college-stoner photo).

Gawker is a rumor-mill, no doubt. But the article here seems to be designed to lead people to believe in rumors without relying on any verified facts. Tisk, tisk. I'm not surprised, just a little disappointed.

If nothing else, it's newsworthy that his security detail is willing to snitch on him to score political points.

The people of NY need to wake up for this dangerous aspect of the game NYPD is playing: in collusion with the Police Unions, NYPD is resorting to borderline criminal tactics, in order to seize the "de facto" political power in town.

If New York were a central American country, we would recognize this as the early stages of a military coup.
