Most white people will never admit that white privilege is a thing when it is. Right now, "kill all Muslims" is trending on Twitter. I highly doubt if the kid were brown or black he would have survived. How many stories have we read about POC getting killed unarmed and not pointing a weapon towards cops? But there are plenty of stories of white people being dickheads towards the cops and escaping with their lives.

Anybody would have assumed he was white considering what neighborhood he lives in. If this took place in a black neighborhood, he most likely would have been dead.

Not a race issue on this story, lets be honest. Seeing anyone with what appears to be an assault rifle, in public, is scary.

The bigger story is - airsoft guns. Why are we buying these for our kids and why are we not giving them proper guidance regarding how fucking terrifying they look?

It's amazing. I spent my childhood playing with cap guns that looked realistic, yet I never was threatened by any cop or other adult, and I don't believe any of them felt threatened by me. These airsoft guns come with bright orange tips that identify them as toys. And anyway, it is legal in many place to open carry.

How come I see pics online of open carry idiots walking around populated downtown areas with semi-automatic weapons and nary an incident from a cop, but kids with airsoft guns are getting arrested and shot? I thought it was legal in OH to walk around brandishing a firearm?

When kids play with guns they tend to hold them in their hands. Having something strapped to your back is distinctly different in terms of readiness to fire.

This may be far off base, but might depend on if the state allows for open carry, and how the individual in questions is holding the weapons (i.e. holstered vs drawn)

I know this has nothing to do with the subject of this article, but it is SO confusing to me why, with the current state of affairs, a parent would let their kid out of the house to wander around with a ski mask and realistic-looking weapons. I mean, yeah, a kid should be allowed to be a kid, but FUCK if I would even GIFT my kid a pretend weapon with all these shootings happening all over the place.

My only thought is that he was 13 and 13-year-olds are about as good at listening as toothbrushes

    Here's another huge difference:

Ohio is an open carry state. Maryland is not.

So it's perfectly reasonable that this kid in Maryland was treated as a threat and shot and killed.

Except you have it backwards.... the kid in the open carry state was shot and killed (as well as the adult inside a Walmart, holding a pellet gun). The kid in Maryland survived.

Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink" has a similar story from a police officer who was dealing with a possible gang member in a park at night. He saw a 15 year old with a possible weapon and ordered him to put the gun down.

He pulled his gun on the kid and then, in the interview, said he gave the kid a chance to take the weapon out and put it on the ground. That moment, wherein the kid put his hand on the gun and took it out, but placed it on the ground, is exactly why that kid survived.

The cops in these other stories shoot as soon as they think it's a weapon, whether it is or not. That's the difference. You give that kid that extra moment to *show* what he's going to do with the gun, and you'll see that they're trying to put it on the ground (or that they don't have a weapon at all). That extra second is the difference between life and death.

I would have to say I think it has everything to do with the neighborhood and nothing to do with race in this particular situation.

      Or this:

"He didn't turn toward me. He didn't come toward me. He didn't raise the gun or point it at me. When I told him to drop the gun and get on the ground, he complied immediately," said Officer Shreves.

Can I get a rough estimate of the number of racist bootlickering cretins who are going to try to pretend that John Crawford or Tamir Rice DIDN'T comply with the triggerhappy maniacs who shot them and thus deserved what happened?

Technically Rice didn't comply, but that's because the cop didn't give him a chance to.

saw someone dressed all in black and camouflage, carrying what looked like an AR-15 assault rife. He was wearing a ski mask and a holster with what looked like a hand gun in it.

The teen had apparently been strutting around the neighborhood with all his Christmas stuff, an Airsoft rifle and an Airsoft pistol, both of which shoot plastic pellets.

I am wrong for thinking that his parents should be jailed for this bullshit? Just kidding, I don't care if you think I'm wrong.

Could we please make sure toy guns are painted bright orange or something. When I was a kid my neighbor, who was a vet, took a toy gun away from me that looked too realistic and yelled at me. Told me guns are not toys. That has stuck with me.
