For the second time this week, I have to pull this gif out. Because this is how I feel about the entire UVA situation in general.

I just found out that my rapist will suffer 0 consequences for leaving me covered in blood. Insufficient evidence. I was able to read his statement in the university's report. It was almost comical- total denial, slut shaming, painting himself as virtuous, and even offering to talk to me to help my healing from my mental misunderstanding. He then threatened to sue me for slander. He then identified as a lover of women and a feminist.

On the plus side, I now have a bird's eye view into both sides of a rape case, with quotations! So that's good for the book.

Question for the lawyers: as long as he is unnamed, with no identifying characteristics, can I use his direct quotes from the rape report? Is there any way that could come back to bite me?

I've got 18 years to figure it out, but I'm leaning towards online colleges for my kid. Computers don't rape people outside of freaky sci-fi movies.

Just fyi, a new report came out saying that college students are actually less likely to be raped than those the same age who don't go to college.

Wasn't the big problem with the Sandusky scandal that university officials failed to contact police when they found out children were being molested? Do you really feel comfortable having people withhold information about rapists roaming the streets?

There's a big difference between mandatory reporting for offenses against children, and mandatory reporting for offenses against adults. (Though, I should note, while the reasoning is that children cannot decide for themselves, or are not capable of reporting themselves, even mandatory reporting for offenses against children is somewhat controversial, because it can also have a chilling effect.) But, universities have tried mandatory reporting before, and it has been shown to have a chilling effect. In fact, I'm fairly certain Jezebel even reported on it. Ironic effects are real things, and we need to consider them when coming up with strategies for combating sexual violence.

I agree that the "ironic effects," as you say can be negative, but it seems to me that such thinking really has it's own set of ironic effects. Without people reporting rapes, colleges can claim that it's no longer a problem. Serial rapists can continue to rape undeterred. Without legal documentation, there won't be accurate statistics on rape which both activists and police can draw from.

I'm a College Professor working at my second "mandatory reporting" state school. This may sound great on paper but it's a terrible idea in practice. I'm one of those female professors who tends to strike up a personal rapport with students and twice I've had to go through the whole "is this a situation that has to be reported?" query through the college system, even though the students asked me to keep it confidential. Without this requirement I could at the very least counsel them on who to talk to, but with it in place I'm now having to caution them *before* they open up, which has precisely the kind of chilling effect you'd expect. Violate their trust, or signal to them that the school doesn't care? You decide.

I hate that school can handle sexual assault outside the criminal justice system. That being said I totally get why people don't want to go to the police. The justice system needs to step up. I can't say this enough.

This whole thing is a shit storm.

Whenever college rape mishandling stories come up people (and often it's well intentioned people like Jezebel commenters) will always talk about how colleges shouldn't be handling sexual assault in the first place, as if getting rid of Title IX regulations would help things. Victims already can go to the cops, there's a reason many choose not to. Removing colleges from the process just takes away an option that victims have.

"The existing frat rules weren't followed very well or regulated honestly when I was a student in Charlottesville, and the actual likelihood of three sober brothers and bottled water and food and no pre-mixed drinks at every party remains—sorority rush, fraternity rush, and the academic semester haven't even started yet—to be seen."

This partly worked for us at OSU. The sober brothers and outside security did work. You just make the 1st 3 guys to go to jail if an alcohol death occurs the sober brother (ie Social Chair, President, Risk Management Chair). The food and N/A beverage was a ruse. It was the same vegetable plate until it got too gross to put out, then a new one. It was accompanied by a couple 2 liters. Water was never an issues as we had 3 or 4 water fountains. Also, regarding jungle juice, we never made it for big parties because it was a mess. We always went with the standard 100 cases of Natural Ice.
