I hope other businesses walk in and headhunt those employees. But given that most mall employees are scared shitless of the corporations they work for, I doubt it would happen.

Let's be honest here: retail labor isn't exactly hard to come by in these situations. Headhunting is, for better or for worse, for people with relatively more rare skills.

The fact is, we need to protect lower skilled workers largely because they are interchangeable from a market perspective.

That sign rouses the rabble. No other corporation would touch these people with a ten foot pole.

They're tainted in the eyes of our 'capitalist' system.

Typical mall shopper: LOL TL;DR 70% off! Sale means good price and I'm a smart, savvy shopper!

...what do you mean the prices are always the same? It's a sale, dummy.

Years and years of a sales bitch (*ahem* associate) right here, and those signs always make me LOL. My personal favorite: "Is the whole store 60% off?"

....No. Because the sign says "Up to..." 60% Off. And out fine print wasn't even that small.

Hell, even when I go to a store and the good is marked at xx% off, I immediately go into, "fuck this, time to comparison shop" mode and go online to see if there are any other places selling it. I don't trust anyone's prices— if you claim your retail price is $100, and then mark it as $50, it's technically "50% off as marked" even if Amazon has it for $25.

The Wet Seal at the Dayton (Ohio) Mall had a sign also. Someone posted it on the r/dayton reddit.

I thought it was pretty funny

If all that's true (and two separate stores have written it, so...), that is SUPER shitty.

Wet Seal is a poorly run company with shares that fell below 6 cents. The reason why they aren't giving severance, and benefits..THEY HAVE NO MONEY. Most forecast they won't make it through the year. This is common with companies that are going out of business. Anyone who has been following Wet Seal knows they have had a hard time knowing their customers, they say they are a tween company, then a teen company, then a young adult company..and then try to sell outdated Lion-King t-shirts and 90's looking Blossom pants (if you don't know that show look it up) to kids who want Urban Outfitters. While I understand the employees being mad..it's a reality of bankruptcy.

No one is treated with less respect, or less regard for their legally entrenched rights as workers, than retail clothing employees. Want a 4 hr shift at midnight, folding clothes for minimum wage? No? Well, then, you must not have the sort of go-getter attitude we're looking for at Nine Dollar Rayon Sarong Emporium.

I worked at The GAP for three years in high school when our store closed (there were two others about 20 minutes away and ours was the worst performing one, the others were in bigger and better malls) and they transferred every single one of us to either another GAP or an Old Navy or a Banana Republic. Everyone was to give them a list of stores they'd want to go to and the manager made it happen. I decided to move out of state on a whim and had her transfer me to a GAP in the south. Everyone kept the pay they had at the old store too. There might be some issues with GAP, but I thought it was nice that none of us were out of jobs.

Wet Seal sounds like a shit place to work.

That was awesome of Gap. Not sure a similar thing could happen for these Wet Seal employees because it sounds like they are closing down ALL the stores.

Like GAP, who owns Banana Republic and Old Navy, Wet Seal also owns Arden B and Blink by Wet Seal, which are other stores in malls. The sign they mentioned said "no transfers to open stores". That's why I brought up my story.

It's not just one store. I saw several other similar signs posted to Wet Seal's facebook page. And a whoooole lot of pissed off comments on basically all of their recent posts. There's also a lot of talk about the ethics of selling gift cards knowing the stores are closing.

    Here's Wet Seal's executive compensation for FY2013

CEO John Goodman was paid $2.65 million dollars to manage a company that now has a market cap of under $5 million, and now they are stealing employees' paychecks.
