What possible reason could a young mother with multiple children have for carrying a loaded firearm on a shopping trip to Wal-Mart?! Wal-Mart is a threat to the economy but guns aren't going to do shit to stop that.

Seriously. What the fuck is happening in Idaho Wal-Marts that you need a gun when you shop there?

This is fucking insane. And, also, no one reply to me defending the carrying of loaded firearms or I will fucking lose it on you. Fuck you and your hillbilly bullshit.

SO very well said. Thank you, I'm with you on this one. As for gun owners saying guns aren't to blame...well a mother died, hard to see any other way besides a gun that a toddler could kill his mother...She should have been more responsible, but still. No gun, no death.

THANK you. I am a single female who lives alone. It would be way more frightening to me to have one around than the idea of some imaginary burglar... the one thing I can think reading this story is thank god it didn't hit a bystander or one of the kids.

GOD DAMN IT. If you cannot keep a firearm secure and under your control at all times, you should not own it.

I'm really curious what kind of hair-trigger loaded weapon with either the safety off or a similarly hair-triggered safety mechanism a two-year-old could manage to fire.

It would have to be a "perfect storm" situation but a safety lever could be dislodged due to repetitive movement if the pistol was just rattling around in a purse full of stuff. Many semiautomatic pistols do have sensitive triggers. If you MUST carry in a purse, use a DEDICATED ZIPPER COMPARTMENT and carry a revolver that lacks an external hammer (less to get caught on fabric). Revolvers usually have more trigger resistance than semiautomatics do.

You mean a good toddler with a gun, don't you? After all, the only thing that stops a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun.

Ok, so the pro-gun-carrying response is that she was clearly not a responsible gun owner. Ok, sure (although when all manner of ostensibly trained and "responsible" gun owners end up accidentally shooting people - i.e. police, soldiers, gun safety instructors - this excuse starts veering into the "no true Scotsman" fallacy). The problem is that she had a conceal carry permit, which means the state issues conceal carry permits to people who aren't responsible gun owners. So the argument I keep hearing about how conceal carry weapons aren't a big deal because people who get such permits are responsible gun owners is clearly bullshit.

As someone who is licensed to carry I can say the whole thing is a joke. The only gun owners I know who carry (I don't at all) would be just as angry and sad as the next person. However, most would not be effective shooters in a serious situation. I fail to see how CCW training is sufficient pretty much anywhere I've lived.

Why don't I carry? Lots of reasons. I can't have my gun at work, there may be kids in the house from time to time so the gun is never left loaded or unattended, and most importantly, I don't feel confident enough in it. And while I currently live in a situation where I am totally nervous around my neighbors for right reason, I think it's a bad idea. I have it so I can feel safer transporting it in my car to the range for target practice in my trunk.

In Indiana, you don't even need to take training to get your permit. That's terrifying.

The state also issues driver's licenses to people who aren't responsible drivers. And people are allowed to buy and install pools who aren't responsible pool owners. There are many many many things in life where if you are irresponsible you could cause injury or death to yourself and others, but what boggles my mind is that while so many here seem to think everybody should be willing to give up their guns because some moron in Idaho did something stupid, NOBODY is making a similar argument about cars and swimming pools, even though there are far more accidental deaths from irresponsible behavior with cars and swimming pools. So why are guns so special?

When someone gets into a fatal car accident that wouldn't have happened if they stayed home that day, or didn't drive or get into cars. Maybe everybody should just use public transportation and not even have the right to drive because CLEARLY people are going to die if they are allowed to drive.

When someone dies in a pool accident, that wouldn't have happened if the pool wasn't there.

Pools and cars are clearly evil and nobody is truly responsible enough to handle them. Look at all the deaths! (Far more than with negligent gun situations.) Is this a tragedy? Yes. But I also think it is an equal tragedy when someone is texting and driving and everybody in the car drives. Let's also stop people from owning cell phones because too many people are irresponsible with them and it causes people to die in car crashes. I also think it's a tragedy when a parent looks away from a minute and a kid drowns in a neighbor's pool. But we NEVER have this kind of outrage about those things, and even when we do and even when we rant about that particular situation and the tragedy and how foolish the adults involved were... nobody ever says: That's why cars/pools/cell phones are evil and no one should have one. It's only a matter of time until they kill someone.

These "child shoots mother/brother/sister/neighbor" stories are heartbreaking. Because this child's mother was so irresponsible, this little boy will have to live his entire life with the burden of having killed her. Hopefully he's too young to remember.

The horrible thing is that even if (God willing) he's young enough to forget the details, his 3 siblings, who were with him and his mother, will most likely remember all too clearly what happened and how.

I thought about this for a while after I read about it on the Daily Fail, for a long time. You have four children and a firearm in your purse. How does that make you feel more safe? That would make me feel infinitely uneasy, which I think is the opposite of how carrying a concealed weapon is supposed to make you feel.

Having a gun for protection is inherently problematic because the only way you could use it to protect yourself is if it's loaded and close at hand. But if it's loaded and close at hand, it's much easier for it to be accidentally discharged or turned against you.

This is why I don't use my permit. I feel incredibly unsafe despite years of shooting. I feel as though the costs outweigh the benefits. And while at some point, I look forward to taking my step kids to target practice, I want to wait until they are old enough and don't want to recklessly expose them to firearms. Having a weapon anywhere but locked up around kids that aren't responsible enough to take to the range is not something I advocate. And even then, guns really should be locked up.

Will someone please tell me again about "responsible gun owners" because I'm stuck on the fact that a child will have to grow up knowing s/he killed their own mother. What's it going to take to get the NRA to stop calling the shots, America?

Responsible gun owners do not keep their loaded weapon in an insecure position, such as a purse that is left unattended next to a toddler.

Well, there are technically responsible gun owners (at least up here in Canada). I am married to one. Three hunting rifles, unloaded, locked in a gun safe, key and ammunition not kept in the house. It is very easy to be responsible. However, I'm not sure how you can keep a gun for protection and be responsible about it. It's no use to you unless it's really accessible. And if it's really accessible, it's not safe.
