I'd be curious to see a historical study that cross-studies multiple ideologically "pure" warring states to see how common this behavior is. Put another way, I know for a fact this was done by the Japanese during the WW2 era. I'm sure this was done by the Mongols. We know it occurred during the Peloponnesian War. And so on.

This is really not particular to ISISIL. But I'm curious how common it is and what factors lead to it. Ideological surety? Race/ideology-based warfare?

It's easy to say they're evil bad bad guys, but what leads some shitty political/military organizations to be this way, but not necessarily others?

I'd say (almost) no matter what the movement, the weakest in the particular societal context will suffer the most. That seems to me to be the connection..

Religion leads them to be this way. It's really that simple.

This is why I'm baffled by stories of girls and women sympathetic to this group trying to get their asses over their.

This is so revolting. I honestly can't comprehend the mindset that not only normalizes this but promotes it.

How the men who do this to these women even sleep at night? How can you not see a woman as a person? How can you willingly inflict so much pain and fear and just not care?

it's the first thing you said - they don't see women as people. their feelings are not the same and are not as valid as men's. their scripture (and a great deal of christian scripture, too), which they see as divine and therefore the highest authority, justifies this so there's no need to question it. in fact doing so would be blasphemous. dehumanization is a necessary precursor to all violence, but once it's occurred the violence comes easily (they must deserve it in some way, or at any rate their suffering doesn't matter, no more than the suffering of cows getting turned into beef - cows are made for beef, women are made for sex). we see this with all groups and all wars, but the struggle to get men to see women as people just like them is , well, ongoing.

Everyone knows that torture and sexual abuse is only OK if the person might know something you think it is important to know. At least everyone in the "civilized" world. (He said with heavy sarcasm).
