"This is one of those tragic situations where somebody is now without a home and for such a minor reason," said Frankfort Police Major Robert Warfel. "It's disturbing."

I am sure the statement was not intended this way, but this woman is without a home because a man burned it down. THAT is not minor. Minor would have been a short circuit in a kitchen appliance, a rag left too close to the stove. That is a minor reason to be without a home. A man burning your house down because you wouldn't go out with him is not minor. This statement implies that her refusing to go out with this guy is minor, and her not going out with him is the reason she is without a home. And that annoys the shit out of me.

I dunno, I think you're reading a big much into it. I mean we can all agree that burning down someone's house because someone rejected you is really really stupid. I mean, we can also agree burning someone's house down in general is stupid. I think it's nice that the officer is acknowledging how harmless and how not a big deal her rejection of this man is. It's a big point. Rejection of this kind in general ain't such a big deal. And it certainly doesn't warrant this kind of retaliation. I think that's all the officer meant, and he's right. Someone burned down a house over a minor issue. That's horrible. And yes, is very disturbing.

Stupid? Burning down someone's home is "stupid"? I'm sorry but I can't even move beyond that. And no, I am not reading too much into anything. You just aren't reading far enough. That is stupid.

is it just me or does this make it sound like it regularly happens that people are suddenly without homes for minor reasons? not the point of this story, i'm well aware, but this phrasing is so odd.

It's Kentucky-speak. There's a very weird way some men speak and you have to wrap you brain a bit. He's actually trying to say:

This woman is without a home because some jackass overreacted to what any sane person would have perceived as a minor slight to his ego.

The minor is not what happened wrt to the house, but minor meaning the woman didn't do anything to deserve such a heinous act against herself. That her act was a "minor slight' at best.

got it. is he like, just being overly polite to the point of not making sense? like so polite he's completely negated what actually happened?

The Police Major also had this to say about his advances on Facebook: "She rebuffed those and it's kind of what set this all in motion." So basically it's her fault.

Just like when there is a mugging. That person choosing to walk down the street is what set it all in motion. Not the fucking asshole who chose to mug.

      Quality police work there, Major.

I liked the part about "such a minor reason." Soooo, there's a proportionate reason out there to break into someone's house while they're christmas shopping and burn it down?

Whoa, when that story made rounds about that woman who attacked her own grandmom over refusal to be Facebook friends, that wasn't an invitation to one-up it.

Is it me, or is the awful just crawling out of the woodwork of late?

When the Vandals sacked Rome, I think the average Roman was fine with it at that point.

I wonder who our 'Vandals' will be?

No. There is NO reason, other than this guy is a dick. Turning someone down is not a reason for ANYTHING TO HAPPEN EVER.

I agree, but he's trying to actually say that the slight to the man, if any, was so minor only someone really off the rails would react this way.

His phrasing is off, but his sentiment isn't that bad.

See, but I don't understand why that is a slight. If someone isn't interested on going on a date with you, "Awesome, thanks for not wasting my time! Lovely talking with you!" - ordinary reaction.
