Hey! Whoa there, JK... the dude was from Georgia. Baltimore was where he shot his gf. Baltimore doesn't need any more with its image, thank you very much.

If all unions are to be busted eventually anyway, police unions should be first on the list. Funny how they rarely get brought up by anti-union right wingers (I'm sure some genuine libertarians hate police unions, but not run of the mill conservatives).

If we could get rid of all unions and corporate lobbiests in one shot, it would be a good day.

Its a well known fact that Chris Christie targeted Education unions over the police unions in NJ (who's members actually pulled in shit tons more money from taxes and had much higher retirement salaries with lower education levels than teachers) because they chose to endourse him. The NJEA knew he was a crook even after his "letter" to the teachers promising he could be trusted which was why the first thing he did was go through every avenue possible to destroy any power the NJEA had.

Only after he was elected for the second time did he start to turn on the police union, when they couldn't do anything about him.

Getting mad at Lynch is like getting mad at a defense lawyer who says his client is innocent. He's paid by the police to represent them when they get into trouble and to negotiate contracts. He's ALWAYS going to take their side because that's what he gets PAID to do. If you don't like it take the test and put on a uniform

Not really. Lynch doesn’t just reflexively defend cops; he goes out of his way to paint others, like Bill de Blasio, as sympathetic to people who kill cops.

We can feel animosity towards anyone who lies, defends illegal acts as being acceptable behavior, and blames victims or anybody other than the people doing the horrible behavior. A good representative should not make you look like a raving asshole, unless that's exactly what you want.

it was SO BAD—-weeknights from 5-9PM, a room full of 16 year olds, back when you could smoke cigs in offices.
I would go through a pack per 4hour shift. At 16. Soliciting for money to support cops.
...it just boggles my mind, when I think back.

In fairness, its not like Lynch represents the majority of NYPD officers. Oh wait, he literally represents the majority of NYPD officers.

I just saw this quote from Jon Stewart ("You can have great regard for law enforcement and still want them to be held to high standards") and it struck me how similar this guy and his ilk are to shitty, entitled parents. You know the kind. The kind whose kid steals a yacht, but they're like "CAYDEN DOES NO WRONG." then pay Cayden's way out of being in trouble. Good parents want their kids to be good, so they set high standards and dole out consequences for poor behavior. I wonder what Lynch's parents were like...

    Also, what a name, eh?

Beyond whatever issues single cops have that have gotten into trouble have, this makes it clear there's a pervasive 'you're either with us or against us, and there's no grey area' mentality throughout and that can't be good for anyone. When you start thinking you're above /any criticism whatesoever/, there's no room to fix any problems you might have or allow for any sort of growth.

And I am sure people will read this and completely agree with everything he's saying, and that scares me a lot too.

Besides, disagreement is a sign of diversity.

Ur-Fascism grows up and seeks consensus by exploiting and exacerbating the natural fear of difference. The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.

There is a very similar attitude among people who are unhappy with law enforcement. The feelings are strong on both sides.

You can't. It's a matter of free association, so unions and ordinary citizens can associate with whoever they want.

Now, pointing out that this guy is a fucking lunatic who actually disparages cops every time he opens his mouth is a pretty good way to (start to) convince cops to drop him as their spokesperson. When you defend assholes and douchebags, it just brings every other good cop down to that level...

He is an advocate, advocating for his group. But he forgets that one of the major facets of persuasion is credibility. You cannot persuade others when what you say lacks any semblance of thoughtfulness or reflection. Making concessions, when appropriate, is key to persuading an audience of your good faith. He refuses to ever make a single concession. Every cop's an angel. Anyone who says otherwise is the devil.

Patrick Lynch is the 51-year-old president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the largest and most influential union of the New York City Police Department.

Wait wait wait. Just how many unions represent the NYPD??
