If a police officer were describing that as the action of a civilian, I believe the term they'd use is "overkill".

Instead of reporting on this shit just let us no when a cop murders somebody and gets charged with it. That would be news.

Agreed. And what an occasion it will be! You guys wouldn't believe the ideas I've accumulated on Pinterest for my upcoming "Cop Receives Punishment For Anything At All" Party.

I haven't even started my Pinterest on this. First I'm doing, "When all the world and everything in it literally turns purple", then my "When planets can marry" theme, and "I remember the days before this diamond was a bit of carbon", and maybe then it would be timely.

I am not *even* all hatin' on cops, but since I was a kid, I have seen things. (Some) Cops have been copping for a very long time.

Am I allowed to be mad about this without implying I want a lunatic to kill cops? The rules are getting pretty hazy about how I can criticize corrupt police practices?

No. If you criticize police killing unarmed civilians then it's like you're putting guns in the hands of assassins.

In Milwaukee? More than half of all black men in their 30s and 40s are or have been locked up, many for non-violent drug offenses.

WHAT? I'm aware of the racism and corruption and broken courts and for-profit prisons and the war on drugs and all that, but HALF? Your country continues to stun.

Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the nation (and probably one of the most racist), and "ghetto" there might as well be in the original sense of the word.

14 times? 14 goddamn times? I'd say after the first 5 shots you're just getting your rocks off. Fuck this guy. I wish I believed in the after life so I could rest knowing he will be punished at some point...

Police are trained to use as many shots as it takes to neutralize the threat, up to emptying the clip. Next time you're getting beaten with a baton, see how many shots it takes you to stop them. I bet it's more than 5.

Many CIVILIANS who are in these situations, often say they only remember firing 4-5 shots, when they emptied their guns. Cops are trained to be more cognizant of how many shots they're firing and are supposed to stop when the person is no longer a threat.

Can you guys please stop reporting the number of shots as though any particular number is "excessive." One shot potentially means an accident. Two or more means the cop was shooting to kill - which, regardless of circumstances, is how a gun SHOULD be used if it's going to be fired at all.

A cop is trained to shoot until the threat is eliminated, no more, no less. Are you saying this person continued to be a grave threat after being shot 10 times? Or did the cop panic and empty his magazine, likely missing a few times in the process.

I don't think he was a grave threat to begin with; I don't think the cop should have fired his gun at all. But as far as I'm concerned firing a gun is an all-or-nothing proposition: either you're trying to kill someone (in which case you fire your gun) or you aren't (in which case you don't). The fourteen bullets is irrelevant, in my opinion.

I find it shocking that someone who voluntarily signed up to carry a gun and exert authority and force upon the citizenry, while being militarized by the wealthy and powerful groups that he is sworn to protect, would ultimately engage in an act that is the exact result of the political, economic and social training he was given.

      Shocked, I tell you.

"There is a startling racial divide in America between how whites and nonwhites view police and the criminal justice system, according to a CNN / ORC poll released today.

More than half of white Americans - 57% - think none or almost none of the police in their area are prejudiced against blacks. Just one quarter of nonwhite Americans feel the same way.

The survey, which was mostly conducted before the shooting of NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos in New York on Saturday, found similar results on perceptions of the justice system as a whole. While 41% of Americans say the criminal justice system treats blacks fairly, far more whites - 50% - see equity. Among nonwhites, that figure drops to just 21%. Two-thirds of nonwhites said that the criminal justice system favors whites over blacks."~cnn.com
