This seems to serve a few purposes. Since Sony has, indeed, threatened news outlets with legal action if they don't like any given disclosure (laughable, to be sure, but God knows they have enough lawyers), it doesn't hurt to hide behind a pseudonym.

This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think it's laughable that they're trying to prevent news outlets from covering the story. The way I see it, publishing information that was received illegally in order to make money is the same as selling stolen goods.

Of course there will be reporting about the leaks, but publishing emails is just . . . icky.

Wouldn't every and any outlet – Gawker included – use a pseudonym under these circumstances, though?

These stories are obviously controversial, and often require labor-intensive reporting.

Not exactly seeing Deep Throat/Watergate levels of investigative reporting from William Boot. Kids today, they tire so easily.

It's labor-intensive insofar as it requires combing through thousands of leaked documents and determining what's newsworthy.

Maybe whoever is writing these is afraid of getting doxxed. Especially since the GOP has already threatened family members of Sony employees.

If they're worried, it's not about GOP. If anything, the reporters are aggravating the damage of GOP's hack by spreading embarrassing information faster.

BUT, yes, there may be other consequences the reporter(s) wish to avoid.

I bet you didn't even consider the possibility that they've actually hired a person named William Boot to report on this topic. Shoddy reporting, Trotter. You'd fit right in at Rolling Stone.

Read Boot's author bio. It says he covered the war in "Ishmaelia," which is not a real place.

it would seem a little bit like SONY shooting themselves in the foot to threaten to cut off access between the journalist and their stars during press tours, because it's their movies that they are trying to publicize. The less press you allow your stars access to the smaller the audience you reach with the pre-packaged message that you want them to walk into your movie ( if they know about and choose to walk into that movie at all) considering.
