Why is it so hard for people to accept that medicine is real?

Look, Internet person. Medicine is hard. I don't understand medicine. It is a lot easier to think that the pinko-in-chief is out to get me and my blaze-ified babies.

Who needs vaccines when you can buy a $250 case of essential oils and become your own Family Physician? (something I actually saw posted on Facebook today).

Don't forget the power of eating a raw vegan diet! That shit cures everything! Just eat a salad and your whooping cough will magically disappear, nay, you will never actually get sick, ever!

That's right! Just like our pioneer ancestors did! Nothing like topping off a day of plowing and log-splitting with a nice fresh arugula salad - and look at how big and healthy they turned out!

Wait... the vaccine might not work? Um, can we go into that in some more detail? How is that not a bigger story here?

The vaccine may not work to limit the spread of disease (emphasis may). It does help decrease severity of illness in those vaccinated. It's addressed in the linked article.

Sometime in the 90's they switched to a new vaccine. The old one was a whole-cell vaccine that was a lot more potent than the new one, but had the potential for some nasty side effects. The new one just takes a mix of immunogenic molecules from the pertussis bacterium and has fewer side effects, but doesn't do as good a job at rallying the immune system.

Maybe this is my impractical preggo brain thinking crazy talk, but mothers of Jezebel - is there a way that I can tactfully tell parents of my future children's friends that if their kids aren't vaccinated, they can't play with my kids? Mostly because I don't want a younger not-yet-inoculated sibling to get sick, but also because I don't want to have to fraternize with such stupid people.

My husband has had some serious health problems, and can't get a booster this year. I straight tell people that we can't have unvaccinated kids in our house, and ask before bringing my kids to theirs. I don't think you need to worry about tact when someone might kill your family.

I think the way to do it is come up with a conversation opener for when you meet other moms of really young kids, like when you're at music class or mommy and me, the park, etc. Like "hey do you have a pediatrician around here you like? Our just moved away and little Tadpolish here needs her next set of shots." If they are an anti-vaccine whackadoodle, they will probably tell you right away, because half the reason they're like that is because they enjoy telling people about the woo. Also, pick a normal preschool, one that doesn't make you go work there once a week and that proudly teaches kids numbers and letters. Basic is good.

I'm a professor in a College of Education, so my students are constantly in schools, and I go into schools to observe them. This year, I asked my doctor for the booster for this. I totally buy into science. Dose me up.

It's always a good idea to get boosted. We even got titrated so that we could boost most effectively. I think the only thing I didn't need was Hep family and Yellow Fever — which is only a 14 year old vaccine in my body. :P Eveyrthing else needed a boost.

I got my booster last year in combo with a tetanus vaccine. I can run through rusty nail fields with impunity!

It should be a crime to not vaccinate your children. By refusing such a simple and proven procedure, you are willfully endangering the lives of thousands. Don't give me that "personal choice" crap, either. It should be my personal choice to live in a society which isn't purposefully exposed to virulent diseases that are more at home on the Oregon Trail.

I do believe in personal choice, because civil rights and all that jazz, but I also believe in my right to label people who don't vaccinate their children as "fucking idiots."

It's one thing if you want to walk around unvaccinated. It's completely another if you force your uneducated choice on your children who don't know any better. The problem is also that destroying local herd immunity affects far more than just the "fucking idiots" and their children who didn't want to get a shot.

Yesterday I received a letter from my kid's middle school. She has to get a whooping cough vaccine booster by June of next year or she won't be allowed to enroll in 7th grade.

I am almost positive my son got this booster, but I am sure as hell calling his doctor today to make sure. We are here in LA, not taking any chances for any of us.

To conclude, we're not not pinning this on Jenny McCarthy.

OK, I will., along with all the other unnecessary deaths and pain caused by her and her hateful band of nattering nabobs of nonsensical anti-science gobbledygook.

Check again. Italicizing the second not means it's not there because of an editing mistake. That's a double negative, so they are blaming her.
