What a petty fine to level, most especially because I can't imagine any other housing related fine like this being charged before end of year check out.

I used to do that work and I would charge a student as soon as I was aware of damage. It kept the end-of -year vandalism down. One year I waited to consolidate the work and the difference was quite noticeable.

Once people know they will be held accountable, they act like they'll be held accountable.

I dunno, when I was in Residence Life (RA for 2 years, Building Supervisor for 1), they took these kinds of fines way too seriously. The RA's would conduct room inspections with the cleaning/maintenance staff upon room checkout and we're talking hundreds of dollars for pin holes in the wall from posters, paint chips on doors, small scratches on desks, etc., all seemingly wear and tear stuff. Challenging the damages were near impossible, too, since most students/parents weren't clearly instructed that they'll be dinged for every little thing at the end of the year and they hadn't noted any sort of small damages on the check-in form (nothing like doing an inch-by-inch room inspection on college move-in day!!!). Also, as you may have guessed, failure to pay up meant they could forever withhold your diploma upon graduation.

It's quite the racket. After I figured it out the first time around, I just withheld the kids' check-in inspection forms for them to fill out at the end of the year. Residence Life and I fought some battles, but I'd certainly take their animosity along with the free apartment I got with the gig.

I want to go back to college :(

Gotta say, some of these Columbia folks are steadily chipping away at my bad opinion of Ivy Leaguers.

hmmm, when Bollinger was at Michigan I had some respect for his work on increasing racial diversity on campus. That all went into the dumpster along with those mattresses when I read this article on his response to Carry that Weight, and sexual assaults on campus in general. Man up, Lee, and do something about this disgraceful situation.

Seems to me when you leave 28 mattresses at someone's house (pretty creepy going to the guy's home with your protests, I would think Jezebel of all places would be in opposition to that) you shouldn't expect any positive results. I feel the need to say, because of the noodles I've seen around here, this comment does not mean this President shouldn't address the issue, if not step down for the incompetence.

In other news, grass grows in sunlight.

The Office of the President is in a building called the President's House. I assume this is what they're referring to.

I feel like missing the point this strenuously would inflict an injury. Or should. Let us know if you have to go to the ER or anything for pulling something.

I wonder if they hid any surprises for the President to find with a black light.

I'd go one step further than their absolutely phenomenal letter and giant check, and say the university values the MATTRESSES more than they value supporting victims. Pretty bleak and a huge slap in the face. Glad these whipper snappers called them out. Also, the President's House is the best place to air grievances. I know we took full advantage of that domestic symbol of leadership as a impromptu soap box during my campus days.

And, in fact, the University chose to underwrite the costs of the main campus cleanup.

Yeah, how about underwriting the costs of responsibly coming to terms with the 8 students who filed a Title IX complaint against you, and addressing that list of 10 demands?
