And he was sweaty. He put his sweaty armpit on the future whatever-the-non-queen-queen-title-is of England.

    I love him forever.

Yeah, well they flouted American protocol when Kate showed up to a basketball game in Brooklyn in a tweed coat. I mean jeez, at least try to blend in with the locals and throw on some flannel.

THANK YOU. I saw her outfit and was like "…really girl?" I'm not saying she needed to be rocking a LeBron jersey of her own, but some cute jeans paired with a nice top or jacket would've been more appropriate for the occasion.

I love the chasm between our (Americans) limited understand of royalty and how it works in Britain. There is literally no analogue in our history and our society and the idea of a spectacularly different social protocol for a tiny sliver of people is completely alien to us. And our lack of knowledge seems to be somewhat lost on them, like that story about how journalists were expected to dress to meet with the royals.

Which is not to say that I think we live in a classless society with homogenous social expectations, but I don't think there's a tiny class with a codified set of social rules that everyone is aware of.

I felt a similar jolt watching Colbert have to call Obama "President" and "Sir" all the way through his interview, because it reminded me that this is your thing. I think it's nice, don't get me wrong, but we don't have that principle with David Cameron, and the idea of being expected to call him "sir" would be laughable. You can't even joke about assassinating your presidents, whereas it's quite a common joke on our comedy panel shows to wistfully suggest killing the prime minister.

There is no limit to how much more I would respect the institution of the British monarchy if they determined their King/Queen via dunk contest.

The armpit sweat on LeBron is really why Kate is feeling so awkward. I don't think Kate sweats and/or understands why others do.

She's a totally sporty girl — plays/played field hockey and tennis, runs, bikes, etc — so I think she's familiar with the concept of sweating. :)

Also, if she's gone through hyperemesis gravidaram twice, she's probably pretty nonplussed by body fluids. Did she actually have to sit through an entire game prior to this photo op? Because I'm a few weeks behind her, gestation-wise, and I'd be needing all the hugs after that.

I'm bugged by the suggestion that Americans might bow or curtsey. We fought a whole bloody war that says we don't fucking have to curtsey. I'm a total anglophile and damned if I'd curtsey.

Isn't it just about being respectful towards other people's traditions? Like, I'm an atheist, and legally I have no obligation to follow anyone else's religious rules, but I wouldn't front-hug a Duggar, for instance. I'd call Obama 'sir' if we met, even though he's not my president. Likewise, I'd curtsey... Of course, she is royalty in my country, but I'd curtsey to royalty from other places too, if I recognized them.

I truly appreciate the desire to be formal and respectful;it is one that I share. But, I think one can be formal and respectful without curtseying. I'm going to consult Miss Manners and get back to you...

Okay, maybe these royal rules are stupid. But common decency ones are not, and common decency would dictate that you don't drape your sweaty underarm over someone else's shoulder. EW.
