I feel the need to share a particular detail found in CNN International's article but omitted here:

"During the raid, the militants with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) also killed South African hostage Pierre Korkie, according to his employer, the relief group Gift of the Givers.

Korkie was to be released on Sunday, the group said in a statement.

He and his wife Yolande had fallen into the hands of abductors in May of last year, but they subsequently let her go. On Friday, a team of local leaders was finalizing arrangements to reunite Pierre Korkie to his wife and children, the statement reads.

Gift of the Givers recently told his wife that "the wait is almost over."

"Three days ago we told her 'Pierre will be home for Christmas,'" the group said. "We certainly did not mean it in the manner it has unfolded."

Something you should know about hostage negotiations, especially with well organized and financed political groups:

      1) They're always engaged in ongoing, virtually perpetual talks with third parties for release of hostages. Detainees are pawns of leverage taken explicitly to gain something else.

      2) They usually want either cash money or the release of their own compatriots.

      3) They always lay blame for the death of the hostage at the feet of their enemy in the world press. Particular political advantage is gained when the enemy bumbles an attempt to forcibly free the hostage - you get to issue conciliatory statements to the world telling how you were just about to release them (which may or may not be true) while the enemy looks like they needlessly caused the murder of the hostage. However the media always seems to overlook the fact that the hostage is usually (as in this case) murdered by his captors.

I bet neither of these folks had Kidnap & Rescue (K&R) insurance. After reading this book:

I would want whatever organization I was working for to take out a policy for me.

I would rather die from a stray bullet fired from a SEAL team member's M4 as he's trying to rescue me than get my head sawed off by an 8th century barbarian. At least I'd know they were trying to bring me home. Bonus, I don't get used as propaganda by sick fuck Islamists.

Now watch people and the hostages parents bitch and moan about why Obama ordered the rescue and thanks to him the hostages are dead. If Obama would have not ordered the rescue then people would be bitching about how the president never takes initiative. Just fucking let it be. If you want to go work over there and put your life at risk then please sign a contract that states "Yes I am aware that if ISIS captures me, they will chop of my head and use it as a soccer ball for the whole world to see and gasp at. So yes I absolve the U.S. of any responsibility to save my ass for wanting to be part of a helping cause."

The family of Luke Somers may be bothered about the U.S. government's refusal to pay ransom for hostages, but I'd bet that they appreciate the risky attempts to rescue Luke.

Fuck partisan politics. This was a horrible thing to have happened, my utmost sympathies to both fellow's families, and the rescue team. I blame the Al Qaeda.

Honestly, my first thought upon reading this was that I would much rather be shot in a raid and die that way than have my head sawn off on YouTube.

Well fuck it, I hope when the U.S. troops learned that the hostages were dead they shot every single one of the rest of those animals and sanitized the whole damn place.

Well, one account says that two al-Qaeda militants and eight civilians were killed in the raid, while Sec. of Defense Chuck Hagel says that ten al-Qaeda militants were killed. So, it looks like you got your wish, as long as you're not too fussy about who got killed by American Special Forces.

On something like this, I'm really not. And as far as the civilians are concerned...they didn't have to be there. My roommate brings a hostage home, you're not gonna see me hanging around to see how it all shakes out.
