    Again, we don't yet know what is going on. Give it a bit of time for all of the evidence to come out and see if the "discrepancies" being reported are grave or just surface level. That said, shit like this should NEVER, EVER happen:

      I don't know, I'd like to have a little more information about the "discrepancies" before I call this a false accusation. Why is the frat saying "we didn't have a party that night" automatically more believable than "I was at a party there that night"? Are all frat parties large and small chiseled into the wall in the basement to serve as irrefutable proof?

      Or Tawana Brawley, or Henry Hopper, or my best friend in college who hung himself in the woods like an animal after he was expelled, unable to get into a school or find a job after being falsely accused. His life was ruined, so he ended it. Years later, the fucking bitch who accused him admitted to our friends she exaggerated . I am so fucking sick of men's lives being ruined and women jeopardizing REAL victims by lying and destroying the little bit of good will we might have for true victims of sex crimes. There should be consequences for false accusations just as much as real rapes.

    This...is a conundrum.

    Rape accusations should be taken seriously. No argument there. Reporting them, however, necessitates a modicum of responsibility in terms of sourcing and verification.

    Like...false accusations (of any kind) are no joke. Sunil Tripathi, otherwise known as one of the falsely-identified initial Marathon Bombing suspects, would be a great example. You could ask him about it, if they hadn't pulled his body out of a river after his apparent suicide.

    Maybe media outlets should wait to break a story until the background can be sussed out?

      uh... how else are you supposed to prove your innocence (if you are) if the only evidence against you is an accusation? if the story doesn't add up that is literally your only defense. that's how conor oberst disproved his own rape accuser and i bet there are STILL people who think he did it.

    It was a completely unbelievableable story by Jackie. It reeked from the start. There are not roving packs of rapists at UVA, even in fraternities. The alleged lines used by the rapists sounded like fabrications taken from a amateur crime novel.

    I cannot believe so many people were taken along for the ride.

      It was indeed an absolutely horrific, lurid and terrifying story detailing behavior that can only be described as animalistic. If true, those guys didn't need "reprimanding" or "punishment", they needed to be put somewhere for many decades at the least.

      That's the thing. This alleged crime was SO over-the-top heinous and SO utterly vile one must wonder if RS went with it just for the sake of being lurid. I mean come on, if it's true those dudes have to be removed from society, no if ands or buts. Shame on that awful rag for not doing their homework...IF that ends up being the case.

      This is the inherent problem with reporting rape: We're constantly told that we live in a rape culture and that women should be believed when they come forward with these accusations. (Completely true.) Yet we also know that women, like all human beings, sometimes misreport what they've experienced, either to intentionally mislead or inadvertently, due to the emotional distress they've suffered. (Also true.)

      So how is law enforcement and the media ever supposed to know whether they've gotten the story right?
