TNR being a "liberal" paper is a classic example of "he who is known as an early riser can stay in until noon". I'm sure in some distant time they were, but TNR in my life time has always been a war-mongering (sorry, "robust foreign policy" as Politico puts it), pro-corporate magazine for those that would otherwise be Republican if it weren't for all the messy religious nuttery. Solid stuff now and then but ideologically confused.

As long as I can remember they've been the corporatist hall monitor for the left, constantly knee-capping actual progressives and reverse engineering pseudo-liberal pretexts for more war and unfetter support for Israel. Point is, Hughes did them a favor by at least keeping them alive and giving them a pretty sweet web interface.

They jumped the fucking shark when they were taken over by that chauvinistic, bigot neocon Marty "Muslim life is cheap" Peretz and haven't been "liberal" in any meaningful sense since.

Brought up in our modern age, I always did get confused when people called "TNR" liberal, but they're generally the same people that think all media is liberal in spite of its patent authoritarian and corporatist biases.

Reading the Politico article last night it was amusing to see them fall over themselves trying to rectify its political pedigree.

Neither. This is two large collections of mediocrities pissing on each other for reasons that are relevant and interesting only to them. Just sit back and enjoy the show!

It's too bad there aren't hordes of qualified, under-employed journalists waiting to take their places... oh, wait.

      Medieval Knievel's take:

Gabe was a decent Gawker editor.

TNR is a decent magazine and has generally been a thoughtful read in its many iterations.

Is my understanding correct that "contributing editor" is title inflation for "contributor," and a contributing editor does no actual editing other than spellchecking their own work?

Contributing editor is masthead-padding title given to people with recognizable names who used to work at the magazine, usually. Sometimes it's an inflated version of "contributor."

I swear to God last week everyone agreed that the TNR has been terrible for a long time now. This mediocrity of an editor, with a famous brother, deserves this kind of meltdown?

How will we go on without AEI neoconservatives like Anne Applebaum no longer affiliated with TNR? Too much to bear.
