I don't understand— was the prosecutor working for the defense? How did this happen?

Right? It seems like prosecutors are protecting the police officers in these cases. I always heard that "prosecutors could get a grand jury to indict a sandwich." I guess unless that sandwich is a cop who killed a black person.

Jesus Christ. I expected this type of shit from Missouri, but New Yorkers get your shit together. The officer used a banned hold and killed a guy on camera. This isn't complicated.

The fact that you think New Yorkers are above this "type of shit" is laughable. Give me a break.

How many people do the police have to kill before this stops? When is enough enough?

If the people they are killing aren't white then half the population will continue to root for cops to kill the people they were sworn to protect.

    Killer Cop Walks Free

Unfortunately, this headline could be recycled over and over again. Never seems to change.

Perhaps overuse of the headline has a negative impact. Sites like this are quick to blow things out of proportion (not this case, not saying that, I believe this cop should have been charged), so when it actually does happen and should be a big deal... it doesn't have the heavy impact it should. It's The Gawker (and other outlets) Who Cried 'Wolf!', and worse, won't admit when they're wrong.

Of all the stories that came out about cops being awful, I had some hope this one might come out as something more than 'lol nope cop walks free' because of the evidence. Egg on my face, I guess.

I think the question at this point now is 'what does a cop need to do TO actually get trouble?' because at this point it looks like you have free reign to do whatever you want and call it self defense.

Bassguitarhero had a great comment about this. Here's what stuck out for me:

What people WANT when they talk about body cameras for cops is, "If this footage gets out, then the prosecutors will have to take action and then a court will try them and then they'll be found guilty and that'll clean up the department."

You can do that NOW. You don't need cameras. You just need to TRY THEM. You need trials and you need prosecutors willing to bring charges against cops. Without that, it doesn't matter how many cameras you have, because the real thing here is *legal accountability* and just throwing cameras into the mix doesn't change that.

And I totally agree with that sentiment, because it's extremely clear at this point that no matter what you lob at police officers, if there's this wall of bullshit to penetrate, it's not going to stick and they're going to be absolutely fine way too often.

It's just...how do we change this? I pose this to anyone, really. That's what I keep wondering to myself, because everything feels really hopeless at this point. People are demonstrating daily but people still don't seem to care. and eventually it disappears until the next bullshit starts reeking up the place.

What's it going to take? Can anything actually make things better? You would think they'd be more wary about coming off as accomodating to bad police officers with how many are angry, but apparently they don't give two shits because they know they'll get away with it.

I want to believe everyone can agree officers who legitimately step out of line should be punished or at least be properly tried like anyone else who was part of a suspicious death, but I feel like there's way too many people who constantly will side with the police no matter what.

Jesus Fucking Christ, not even involuntary manslaughter? What kind of evidence did the prosecutor present to the grand jury? An MS Paint drawing?

I'm very, very surprised they didn't get the involuntary manslaughter. I'm not surprised in the least they didn't get anything much more than that (the chokehold is not crucial to the case (as others have said, it is improper, but not illegal). But not getting 12 of 23 for the involuntary manslaughter leaves me baffled.

I'm only partially mollified that there are likely no 23 people who know more about this case than the grand jury, and if there are, I'm certainly not one of them. But this requires some real answers, and unlike Michael Brown's case, the civil case against the officers/P.D. is almost certainly going to be powerfully strong. Until I hear more, I'm really quite sad about this.

The American Legal System to black people- "Fuck You."

This has not been a good few weeks for the credibility of our legal system. Hopefully it's showing a lot of people what some of us have known for years.

Even more, the system tells us that our government workers can do whatever the hell they want and it's legitimized. That's incredibly terrifying.
