Just a friendly reminder that somehow other citizens can do this:

    and not get immediately shot.

    Weird.

    I wonder why.

They are douchebags. However I can guarantee you that if they pointed those weapons at a cop they would be shot.

How short is the list of things you can do as a young black man in this country without the fear that the police will murder you for doing them?

That was version 1.0. The new one, 2.0, is a lot catchier:

      Obey and Still Die

I feel for this poor young man because he obviously thought that having a white mother, being "not-full-black," and being in a "safe" mostly-white town would offer him the protection to play dress up without getting murdered.

Unfortunately, the cold hard truth is there is no amount of white family members, money, cash or celebrity that will protect your black ass from the police. A cop would shoot Obama if he was driving by himself through Mississippi. That's the way it works.

Seriously. Poor kid had to be sheltered. I wouldn't dare go out in public with a sword or anything that could be deemed a weapon. A risk not worth taking.

Straight up. I'm a photographer and I'm paranoid about having a monopod or even my camera when it gets dark. I've covered black metal equipment with fluorescent tape just to make it look even slightly less like a gun.

Apparently walking with a replica sword while black is a capital offense in Utah.

Walking while Black isn't the only fake crime the cops targeted him for.

Utah is an open carry state, and that applies to knifes and swords as well. So why do cops think they are justified in demanding that anyone stop engaging in a LEGAL activity, let alone gunning them down for it. That needs to be part of the discussion. Cops everywhere in this country have an attitude that they should always be obeyed, though their demands often violate the laws they are supposed to uphold. Try filming an officer on duty and see the reaction, despite dozens of court cases ruling in favor of the right to record them.

Seems the older I get, the more often I feel the need to play my old NWA records.

You know what is really weird? When cops shoot someone they always say "he lunged for me" or "he attacked me". Even that cop in S.C. who shot a kid reaching for his wallet originally reported that the kid "moved towards him" until the video evidence proved otherwise.

It is as if police officers know that an automatic justification for lethal force is when a suspect "lunges" at them, but that it is such a vague term that it is difficult to prove.

Do these officers not carry tasers around? If so, wouldn't this have been a perfect time to use a taser, instead of a gun?

Well, to be fair, you have to get pretty close to use a taser and that is hard to do if someone is swinging a sword (allegedly).

This is just disgusting. Were there no eye witnesses who could testify other than the men who shot a man in the back 4 times as he ran away? In what way was he a threat to them as he was running?

I was going to attempt some sarcasm and say something like, "soon they'll be killing kids playing cops and robbers in playgrounds," but then I remembered it's already fucking true. Things cannot go on this way. They expect too much of us to stand by and not get angry enough to change the status quo.

This! Apparently we need to agree on some rules of engagement for cops. Deadly force should only be warranted when their is an imminent threat to life. Just because someone disrespects a cop and makes his fat ass run is no reason for him to open fire. Nor is a toy weapon.
