I am SO glad to see Henry attracting the attention of a journalist I trust and respect!

I rarely lift my mask; I comment on io9 about sci-fi and super-heroes; I tell folks like Weinstein and Nolan that I dig and appreciate them, and go back to my quiet, hermetic life...

I have worked for Ibanez, Marshal, Vox, Laney, Samson, Zoom, Crown, TC Electronics, Korg, and many others- and when doing so, was courted by Gibson 5 times over 10 years. Courted. One of my big life goals was to work for my heroes (Jim Marshal, Mitch Colby, Leo Fender, Paul Rivera, Seth and Ted at Gibson, and Rich Lasner... and I worked for most of 'em). I have to tell ya, the MYRIAD tales I'd heard about this prick kept me 100 paces from that damn company (keep in mind, I was seriously recruited, with both monetary and prestige incentives. I just couldn't; Dream or not, Henry was just too notoriously evil. A Harvard douche that bought his way into American Art, and has wreaked a trail of crass destruction ever since).

I feel strongly, and I apologize for this off-the-cuff rant, but many more will come forward to back me up, I'm certain.

Hell, the best story I ever heard about this evil little shit was when a music pro punched him out on the golf-course... And I've heard that story three times about three different golf outings.

Thanks so much for this article, HamNo. I've spent 15 years expecting Rolling Stone to do it.

What's the point of moving up in a company if you don't get more holidays?

Anyone using the word "henceforth" in an un-ironic way is automatically a double douchenozzle.

The day after Thanksgiving part makes him sound like an asshole but that isn't that out of the ordinary. Everyone wants that day off so you have to either make strict holiday schedules or say management can't take it off, period. (Or some places just give everyone that day off in exchange for Columbus or Veterans day.) He was just more dickish about it then most.

    This is weird though:

Henceforth vacations must be taken for a minimum of one week and must be scheduled well in advance.

Why? If it isn't a high demand holiday season day having someone take a day or two of time is more efficient. They use their days and then people don't have to cover for them for a long period of time.

Why would a guitar company, of all companies, need to be open the day after Thanksgiving in the first place? I've only ever worked in law firms, but haven't heard of anyone who isn't a doctor/nurse/retail/servers working the day after Thanksgiving.

My guess is it's not about efficiency, it's about making employees scared to use their vacation time. The whole tone of this implies the people receiving it are well aware that if they really do schedule a one- or two-week vacation well in advance, they might not have their position waiting for them when they come back. After all, the company kept running without them, as far as the CEO is concerned.

These companies are all run by people who watched "A Christmas Carol" and thought that Ebenezer Scrooge was a pussy for having a change of heart.

The approach that he does here sucks but I see the point. You know how we get all those notes about how retail stores (K-Mart, Target, WalMart, etc.) more or less force their sales associates to work on Thanksgiving now.... What he is saying is that if you have going to force a sales clerk making an hourly wage to work from 10PM Thanksgiving night until 8AM the next day, the Regional VP of East Coast Stores should be able to take a long weekend to fly to the Bahamas...

is it weird to anyone else that a CEO is this overly inserted into employees work activities, instead of say their managers? I mean, don't CEOs have some CEO things to be doing? I don't know who this letter was and how high up he is, but seems weird to be this close and involves in employees using vacation days. I don't know, but definitely sounds like a dick in general. I would hope some musicians/rock stars may come out against this type of behavior..... Prolly dreaming

What is it with business men that are adamant about maintaining suit & tie dress codes, but then execute the look so abysmally? Learn to tie a four-in-hand or a half-windsor properly, you cretin.

Because, god forbid, one more gibson guitar doesn't get made. As if there aren't perfectly good alternatives. Juszkiewicz, we can wait until your company gets bought out by the belgians (fill in your favorite nation) to buy our next Gibson guitar.

Also, we're all still choking about the insane price increases you're implementing and the lack of quality difference. Don't look now, but the trend is to buy a great guitar for reasonable money. Anybody who thinks an expensive gibson will make them a better player is part of a shrinking group of suckers.

No, we don't like the pre-antiqued" guitar jag you're on. It's embarrassing to pay 5-15 grand for an instrument with fake wear on it.

Your Colonel Sanders, Les Paul, is dead, and would think you're a dickhead.

In the meantime, it would be nice if you developed an illness.

What is the matter with requiring people to take 5 contiguous day vacations? I have worked as a programmer and this is a common requirement for auditing and security. Besides - Gibson.

What is the matter with vacations of less than 5 days? Most people don't use their vacation time for week-long mediterranean cruises. People like to take a day or two before or after a weekend to fly out to see family, or take a weekend trip.

i have no doubt this guy is a huge asshole, and i believe every employee who is complaining.

With that said, most retail jobs revolve around the holiday season. Most retail jobs dont let you take a day off between black friday and Christmas.

Obviously, he doesnt know how to talk to his employees and he's a dick, and this conversation is usually one he would have behind the scenes with someone else who would have to then talk to this guy and deny the request.
