Philly is full of garbage people but it's a good sandwich town.

I heard that Oscar the Grouch is from Philly, because from what other city would someone be so happy to live in a garbage can?

When I moved here my friend (who was in school here) said, "Philadelphia is great, except its filled with Philadelphians."

I don't get why NYers have all the Philly hate. I went to 8th grade outside of Philly, King of Prussia, and that area and its people as a whole were ok - I wouldn't say garbage. It's not NYC, not even close, so why shit on it when it's not even close?

"Why do people hate City? I used to live not in City and not in City was nice." Philly's gross. Call me when you've lived here. Most people who shit on Philly are Philadelphians. No one shits on this city so hard as Philadelphians. Literally, sometimes.

In a more just world, any politician who voted to allocate even one tax dollar for a new casino or major-league stadium or arena would be automatically kicked out of office at the next election. Voting to host the Olympics or World Cup should qualify for immediate dismissal. These projects are well-understood corporate welfare boondoggles, with casinos in particular piling on extra misery and squalor.

Just like the no-strings bank bailouts, when it comes to funneling money to billionaires they're suddenly all for it. The casinos make hypocrites like Bill Bennett especially happy, as they provide an additional reason for morally scolding the poor even as their cronies rake in the profits.

OMG. All the Philly hate is so effing hipster. Philadelphia is one of the greatest cities in the country. Get out of Brooklyn and look around douche bags.

I concur. I work in Philly and live in Delaware. This city is gross. So is NYC, Baltimore, and DC. I can't speak for any other cities, because I haven't spent a significant time in any other ones, but I can bet they're pretty gross too.

It's both economical and green: Now all the Philly gamblers don't have to drive the 50 minutes each way to/from Atlantic City every time they want to drop a wad of cash.

Isn't this actually kind of why Atlantic City is dying? Too many competing casinos everywhere else?

It probably is; that, and that AC is and always has been a shithole. So if you are a gambler and there's a casino nearer your home (all these Philly/Poconos/CT developments), why bother going to stinky AC?

No, this project is totally different and will magically revitalize a dead economic engine. The guy standing to make a whole pile of cash swears it!

Sure, sure. Because doesn't a rise in demand always follow a rise in supply?

like lottery promises a few decades ago, casinos are a false hope for citizenry and a big lie from city and state officials...the false employment claims, tax abatements, loans, and bloated over estimates of how much money the casino will generate is a scripted sales pitch that has NEVER panned out...look to Ohio and what's going on with the dismal results as we speak..people voted in Ohio NOT to build a casino and what happened? they built it anyway and now cannot pay the loans gotten to build the damn thing and everybody says oh well.
