Why don't they just invest in fucking better lighting. I have not bought so many things from stores because the terrible overhead florescent lighting was washing me out and making me look terrible and I couldn't get an accurate impression of the item.

Follow-up with, the store where I work has the changing room next to a skylight, so you get a mixture of (non florescent) lighting and natural light, in addition to a three-way mirror so you can see all your bits. So I could just be spoiled.

They also need to paint those rooms something other than Universally Unflattering Yellow that seems to be mixed especially for clothing shops.

SERIOUSLY. I have walked away from so many pieces of clothing that I probably otherwise would have purchased because of unflattering lighting. Newsflash: NOBODY looks good under fluorescents, and NOBODY looks good with light shining directly from above and casting harsh shadows under every minute little lump and chub and wrinkle.

Kelly, why rely on Polaroids when you can use computer programming!

I desperately wanted that program and her entire closet when I was a kid. Who am I kidding, I'd still love to have it!

The mirror that shows you every angle of yourself at Macy's is the stuff of nightmares—I'd rather be tricked by a "Skinny Mirror" than see that again.

OMG THIS!!! Every time I look at myself in a dressing room mirror at Macy's I look like a 100 year old meth addict. It's like they don't want you to buy their stuff.

Yes. I have made total peace with how I look straight-on. Please, Macy's, I beg of you... leave the side and back views to my imagination. (I imagine they look PERFECT.)

My Bestie had a skinny mirror (no TM) in her bedroom throughout high school and college. It was set at an angle and it made us look so amazing we would gaze into it before going out and consequently, feel like a million bucks. Man, I loved that Skinny Mirror. Now, apparently, I have an Old Tired Hag mirror in my home and I don't like it, not one bit.

I just made a similar comment. Then I saw this and was like, "is this one of my old roommates?" We're on the same mirror schedule. LOL.

Skinny mirror works great until I see photos of myself from the evening.

I don't think this is a new thing - I've frequently been in store dressing rooms that DEFINITELY had mirrors that were off like this. Years and YEARS ago. "Wait, what? I am bigger than that. This can't be right." A lot of those cheap non-glass kinda flexible mirrors can easily exhibit this characteristic. If you poke it and it warps, Do Not Trust.

Yes. I was in Old Navy (I KNOW) a few weeks ago and everything I tried on looked amazing on me. Like, I started to wonder if I'd lost weight I looked so good. Then I realized it was the mirror.

For sure. I used to wander in the Loft with my then-girlfriend, and they had a giant floor-to-ceiling mirror out in the main shopping area that even just walking past and out of the corner of my eye I could tell was curved to slim. It wasn't even subtle.

Actual conversation with my wife last week:

"Does this outfit make you want to fuck me?"

"Hell to the yes! Whyyyyy are you asking?"

"PTA meeting at school this afternoon. One of the women there really seems to dislike me for some reason. Her dislike seems to increase dramatically when I look good. I thought I'd try and help that along."

      "This seems a touch unhealthy."

"Maybe... but at least it provides some amusement."

I didn't know what to say after that so I dropped it.

My parents have a Gorgeous Mirror in their bathroom. It has to be a combination of lighting and the color of the room, but everyone always looks amazing in that mirror. The one in my bathroom at that house was the total opposite; you always look haggard and drawn. I never knew which one to believe! I know the truth has to be somewhere between "airbrushed model" and "fairytale hag".
