but one takeaway is clear: it wouldn't have happened if there wasn't a gun in the house.

    That's a gigantic assumption.

The 3-year-old could just as easily gotten into a car, started it, put it in drive and accelerated it over the other kid.

Cars are more deadly than guns!

      Ok I will play along:

Cars: must have a driver's license, insurance and get fingerprinted.

Guns: Any asshole can get one, even the criminals.

      Your turn.

Further details are scant, but one takeaway is clear: it wouldn't have happened if the firearm was locked away properly and the parents(or adult whose firearm it was) weren't complete fuckin' idiots.

    Fixed it for you.

You're right, but when I follow up by calling for mandatory firearms insurance (with discounts/incentives for proof of sturdy locks and safes and safety courses) suddenly Second Amendment Man shows up shouting about the jackboot of tyranny.

Properly store your firearm, and then toddlers can't access it and shoot each other on accident. Solved!

And this is why your toddlers should be given proper training in the handling of firearms.

    (note: sarcasm)

I can't decide if "2nd Amendment Toddler" is hilarious or terrifying. I think it's both.

The only thing that stops a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun.

    Not all toddlers.

I am not a "firearm enthusiast" like some others here, so please educate me: is it typical for a shotgun to have a trigger so light that even a 3 yr old can pull it? And without seriously injuring himself? Or is this some sort of gun made specifically for children to be able to shoot?

Actually, you bring up a good point. No, it isn't common to have the trigger pull that light. I imagine it could still happen if the gun fell or was dropped, but a Remington 870 (one of the most common shotguns ever) definitely cannot be pulled by a child (I was probably 11 when I first shot it, and it took a TON of effort to make happen). An adult sure.

Still doesn't change that this thing needed a) locked away, b) in a fireproof gun cabinet, and c) the parents are fucking morons.

They were just playing "good guy with a gun vs bad guy with a gun," like kids have always done.

It isn't yet clear whether anyone will be charged with a crime.

What's unclear about this situation? This kid is obviously *not* a good guy with a gun, which makes him...

I know we're missing details here but I'd like to know how guns are sensitive enough that a toddler can set off the trigger.
