The county's investigation into whether the shooting was legally justified is expected to wrap up by next week.

Can someone with legitimate law enforcement experience explain to me how there's even a chance a shooting could be justified if the victim wasn't armed?

Basically he'd have to be attacking or trying to attack them or someone else with intent and ability to seriously harm or kill them.

Of course, whether or not that was truly the case won't necessarily stop them from ruling it justified.

If the cops have "reasonable suspicion" of the suspect being armed it is enough in a lot of places. They only have to "prove" they were dumb enough to feel threatened by a cosplayer.

Guys, I have a gift. I see the future. 2 days from now: The police were afraid for their lives and the shooting is considered justified and legal.

Just like with the poor guy who was holding a BB gun in a Wal-Mart in an open carry state: who are these fucking people calling 911 when there is no immediate threat to anyone or anything!?!?!?!?!!

The guy is dead because some shut-in doesn't know what cosplay or Manga is? Is that what we're dealing with?

That is NOT to excuse the officer's piss poor "policing" of the situation. But seriously, these 911 callers get the cops all riled up thinking there's an immediate threat to life and people wonder why guys end up shot.

I hope the caller spends the rest of their life lamenting their stupid judgment.

This is why I was really nervous about my husband bringing a fake gun to New York Comic Con. I eventually convinced him not to. Cops are insane.

Not taking issue with the point you are making. But on a side note:

"some shut-in doesn't know what cosplay or Manga is?"

Ha. I think you may have that ass-backwards.

"A narrative in the autopsy states an officer fired three shots when Darrien Hunt charged at him, swinging the sword, as the officer got out of his car. Darrien Hunt ran away and police fired four more times as they chased him, the report says. The autopsy found no drugs in his system.

An attorney for the Hunt family, Robert Sykes, disputed the officers' account, saying a picture taken by a bystander shows Hunt smiling as he talked to two officers."

If the photo exists, then this stinks of police corruption and brutality. That would make this murder.

Like usual then, except with a photo.

People wonder why everybody films the cops now. And why cops hate it.

Why is this not getting national attention. Instead Americans have been divided on a black kid with a shady past being shot by a cop (after an altercation). But here we have a black kid that was shot in the back...and not a word on national news. SMH

Because the cops are obviously wrong here, so it's off-limits. We're only allowed to discuss crimes as a country where it's murky enough for half the population to use it to justify racism, violence and murder. Didn't you get the memo?

I'm going to play devils advocate on this one, because some should.

    1. Do we really expect cops to recognize the difference between a sharpened sword and a dull one?

    2. Is it really exceptional that cops shot somebody who was fleeing with a sword

Now I don't know exactly what lead up to it, it sounds like they were infact being ridiculous but let's drop the "it wasn't even sharp" and "he was running away" stuff.

No, deadly force (READ: drawing your gun, which should only be done when you're ready to shoot someone) should only be used if there is an unambiguous and imminent threat to the police officers or fellow citizens. Lethal force should be a last resort for officers.

Unless he was running into the crowd, sword drawn, wildly slashing as though he were going to behead someone (doesn't seem to be the case here), there is no reason the officers should have had their guns out and safeties off to begin with. How sharp the sword was is sort of a moot point.

And that's where the systemic racism comes in. If the 911 caller describes this guy as threatening others, because he views blacks as more dangerous, the police are more likely to come in, guns drawn and shoot first, ask questions later. If they were just told there was a guy with a sword and ninja outfit doing spins, I'm willing to bet they'd take more time to assess.

Or maybe they're mostly white, gainfully employed and not regularly harassed by the police. You're criticizing a group of people that have for too long endured something most of us only read about.
