About time we finally stuck it to those homeless people I would otherwise just fucking plain ignore on the way to work just like any other person on the street.

Spend just one hour on Hollywood Blvd or Venice Beach being harassed by these able-bodied teens who sit on their skateboards, angrily ask for money, then say "fuck you, man!" when you say no.

Then wonder how they have $5,000 worth of tattoos and piercings.

First off: Fuck both of those places. I've been there. At this point, I'd be offended if there WERE no homeless teen skateboarders on Venice Beach or on Hollywood Blvd. Both of those places are cesspools of humanity and homeless kids harassing people for pocket change basically local culture at this point. I could barely care.

Second off: You're gonna use your anecdotal "able-bodied teens" excuses as a harbinger to hurt people who are considered "real actual homeless people" to you. Good job playing that game. Play it with somebody else.

"We're making it too easy to be a homeless traveling person."

Thus, choose one young homeless boy and one young homeless girl from each of the 12 beach communities and have them fight to the death as tribute to the fair city of San Diego.

This I agree with. The days of the grizzled homeless vet are about done. The guy at the gas station by my house is no more than 19-20, years old, but he stays outside begging for change because, "there just aren't any jobs out there!?" Basically my point is that perhaps this is a deterrent for the trendier homeless vagrant who already gave up what little hope they had in exchange for no responsibility and a need to feed their want for independence at any rate.

Nothing obviously. I just don't believe that being homeless counts as also being independent.

Some members of the Syracuse government are pushing to remove public benches under overpasses (yes, we still have a fucking elevated highway running through the middle of our city... hopefully not for long!) with the hope that the homeless will no longer congregate there.

Yes, that will make them think twice about being homeless. Because man, living out of doors during a Syracuse winter is alright, but man, take away the benches and that's the last straw. I guess they'll all just stop being homeless then, right?

I went to a beat meeting yesterday ( it's a monthly meeting with local police and the public) and it's usually poorly attended. Anyways, there were less than 10 people there are the majority were old white people complaining that homeless people exist. One particularly bitchy old crone had a litany of complaints that went like

" something happened to me this week. I was sitting in my car at an intersection and a homeless person knocked on my window."

" the men from the homeless shelter hang around during the day on the area."

" there are 2 homeless guys living beneath the viaduct".

Felt very stabby but since I was already in a police station I restrained myself.

As Jesus would say, in His infinite love and glory:

"Get a job, ya bums! No, I ain't givin' you my jacket — what are ya, CRAZY???"

Perhaps someone should point out to the good Councilman that Jesus was a homeless traveling person?

There's some people in Europe ending their Mediterranean sea rescue programs to stop incentivizing migrants/refugees to attempt the crossing that I bet this guy would love to meet. I'm sure they'd all be fast friends.

ETA: Woah, I don't even know how to edit this to make it make sense but if you can follow what I'm saying up there, good for you.

Some asshole from the BNP recently said he wants Europe to start sinking boats of migrants heading from Africa to Europe. I guess in his ideal world, that would reduce the need to build concentration camps later.

O.o Holy shit that's crazy! That makes canceling the recovery programs seem positively humanitarian.

I just downloaded the "Urban Traveler" app for my Android. It allows me to book an unfilled bench up to 7 days in advance.

What Rouse really meant to say was..."Although I appear to have the empathy of a robot, I am clearly not one since I violate laws 1 and 2 of Asimov's Law of Robotics. Turns out I'm just an unfeeling dick!"

Haven't some small cities found it's cheaper to house and minister to the homeless than run roughshod over them? I remember reading a research paper or two on this, but don't have a reference handy.

I still like Ole Anthony's point that if each church fully cared for only 2 homeless people, the problem would cease to exist. (I took his numbers at face value, without verification.)

There are about 250 000 places of worship in the USA (as of 2000, see here) and about 600 000 homeless people (according to this) so it's not far off.
