Being a fan of the multi-party system that most democratic countries have (*ahem*), I'm still a bit amused by the fact that there's a "Progressive Conservative" Party. Can any of our resident Canucks clarify where they are on the spectrum of Canadian parties?

Centre-right (for Canada), which corresponds to center-left in America.

It's called the Progressive Conservation Party because in the 1940s, the Conservative Party merged with the Progressive Party.

There is no longer a PC party at the Federal level, but it exists at varying shades of center-right at the provincial level, depending on which way the wind is blowing on any given day (see also: the various Liberal parties).

"Tory, a Progressive Conservative" This must be a Canada thing. I don't think I have ever seen those two words put together to describe anybody in US politics.

They used to exist in the US. A long long time ago.

Think of it as a Blue Dog Democrat. Socially somewhat liberal, fiscally conservative.

The funny part is over. I know it's crass and I don't know how journalists should handle it, but the simple truth is Rob Ford is unlikely to survive to 2018. It'll be a medical miracle if this hard-living man, with a 12-centimetre-by-12-centimetre rare and very aggressive type of tumour, survives the next four years in office in his ward.

For Toronto, it's a sorry ending to a sorry story. Rob Ford is unlikely to return to politics in any substantial way. Doug Ford's reach will exceed his grasp and he'll make a run at provincial power and be shut down by the party politics that exist at the provincial level. One Ford or another will soldier on in Ward 2, but the interesting part for the international media is done with.
