I read this, and while I could further rant at the bullshit inherent in the soul-crushing experience of working for an outfit like Amazon (yeah, I'm that guy; I've done it before. So I'm a shitty capitalist. Big fucking deal), the only thing I'm left with is a blank 'why?'. Why does it have to be this way? What in the fucking hell is so important, so critical to the experience of life itself, that an employee has to, when considering trying to work for a company like Amazon, carefully weigh how much of their dignity and well-being they're willing to sacrifice at the altar of Employment? Yes, there's an element to this that has ALWAYS been a part of work (coal miners in West Virginia, child laborers back in the early part of the 20th century, immigrant workers, etc, etc), but what in the hell does Amazon provide that is that important?

Stuff IS nice, yes. But if there's a delay, or if the wrong item of 'stuff' is delivered, is there not other stuff that could occupy the stuff-owners' attention in the span of time it takes to get or correct the order?

I'm curious - Do those that consistently make 'rate' ever get raises, promotions, or get hired by Amazon? Those staffing companies love to dangle that carrot of being hired by the client, but in my experience it almost never happens.

In other words...if you work really hard at your job does it even matter or does it just keep you from getting fired?

The only reward for doing a temp/contractor job is not getting fired. You give yourself a raise by figuring out the minimum amount of work that you can do without being fired.

My son is apparently the only person who had a satisfactory experience temping at amazon. They pulled him off the sorting line on the second day and while he never got a raise, he got promoted through a half dozen more stations until he was a supervisor. He's going to take a leave from his current job to temp again for the holidays because the pay is better (a few dollars per hour more than last time around).

Temp working in general is the worst. I would recommend anyone avoid it if possible. You are basically treated like cattle, and the customer is all thats important. If they don't like you for any reason you are off the project.

I can't imagine a situation where a college grad can't get better than 11 and hour. Has our economy really gotten that horrible?

Yes, it really has. I know people who graduated from a good school making less than that to start, and even more who haven't been able to find anything aside from barista type jobs. It's not a good market for anyone, and it's even worse if you are trying to get a professional job with less than 5 years of experience.

I'm reminded of the Voltaire quote that "the comforts of the rich depend upon a large number of the poor."

I was reading a book about the Industrial Revolution a while back, and it was describing the horrific grueling conditions that many of the Iron Works employees had to go through, their daily life schedule, etc.

Anyway, it told an interesting story about how two aristocratic brothers were touring one of these massive iron works in England. They were being told about the process of how it all works, and some how ended up discussing the employees. Through a translation error the youngest brother interpreted the man showing them around as having said that the men work for "2 hours". The youngest brother was absolutely appalled, commenting on how he couldn't believe that any man could toil under such conditions for 2 hours. The real figure was closer to 14-16 hours.

It's true, and I LOVE (read: hate) when idiots go "The poor just didn't try hard enough, they could be rich too!". NO you fucking dolt, there have to be more at the bottom than at the top in this fucking system. Only a select few can be up top, that's how it fucking works.

other than the fact that I worked in Nevada and my hiring temp agency was (not making this up) INTEGRITY staffing, this pretty much sums up my two month "at will" incarceration in the Amazon Hoosgow.

Staffing agencies are either named after people, have names that mean nothing but sound high tech and fancy or are named in the most dystopian way imaginable.

Not a proper comment, but a huge thank you for sticking with these stories about our country's have-nots. I wish there were more places where their voices could be heard.

And now, cue Matt Yglesias sticking his head up Amazon's ass and writing another disgustingly sycophantic "contrarian" piece on how Jeff Bezos is fucking Jesus to counter this. Stay tuned!

So Jeff Bezos is "fucking jesus" and "fucking over his temps/workers" at the same time? How does this story end? I"m hoping it's a headline with the world "boycott" inserted somewhere.
