This is all so very meta. Are Canadians really freaking out about this? Or is it just a media thing?

And, yeah, I can't see the CBC (or any large media outlet) pulling the trigger on firing someone without having all their ducks in a row. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I wouldn't say 'freaking out', but there is a lot of interest. We normally don't post all our private sexual habits on Facebook, especially if we have some profile. Imagine if Ira Glass was being sued for sexual harassment and decided to send out a press release announcing his involvement with Furries.

He's not just "someone," either; he's one of the very public, very well-known faces of the Ceeb.

Just out of curiosity, what type of "evidence" besides multiple testimonials from unconnected women would suffice for you? A nanny cam video? I legitimately want to know — what do you expect?

Quite honestly, I don't even know what he is accused of besides some vague rumors sexual indiscretions:

". . .there have long been rumors that Ghomeshi-the-person (rather than the celebrity) is not-so-nice. . . . So much so that when the news of just the firing broke yesterday afternoon, I immediately suspected we were about to hear allegations of sexual misconduct. Which we promptly did."

And it seems as if these women have not even come forward just yet:

"what is so infuriating about that closed-off press culture is that it puts the women who have accused Ghomeshi of misconduct are in an awful position. There is tremendous pressure against them to "go public,""

Quite frankly, this is the first time I have ever heard of or laid eyes upon this individual so I have no idea what is going on. Also, just because there are rumors or even sworn testimony that someone did something to someone else does not make it true. I will have to read about this and evaluate the evidence to satisfy my own personal notions of guilt or innocence. So far none have come across my eyes/ears. Soooooo as I said, "waiting for the evidence."

My local NPR station broadcasts Q on weeknights, and I like the show. Had no idea this guy had such a rep, though. Let's all just hope nothing ever comes out about Terry Gross.

Not least because it would break the Post's headline generator.

That is gone, and people are, I think, sad to see that they now must extend the cynicism and bad feelings to cultural figures as well.

Part of me could believe that "Fired for being critical of the government" conspiracy. The CBC's on the back foot. They lost Hockey Night in Canada (Sidebar to Americans, this is basically cataclysmic. That was one of the best things the CBC had going for it, the next best thing is Peter Mansbridge, currently one of our best news anchors.) CBC could get a massive chunk of its funding pulled at any time by a spiteful Conservative government and doing anything to stop that, I could see it.

But in doing so, they would need to rope in a bunch of independent women and force them to create scandalous lies about a person, that, if proven untrue, would damage their character. And I just don't see that happening at all.

I would say I agree with every word of this up to the point where you say "it's pretty awful" that Ghomeshi has a lot of people reading his post on Facebook. Right now what we have are four stories, only one of them lengthy and public, and not enough information to come to any meaningful conclusion. It's not awful that famous people have legions of fans paying attention to them; it's just sort of a given. Every reporter in Canada would kill for an interview with any of those women, and you know that.

Someone I follow on Twitter who'd been interviewed by him—a Canadian and a woman no less—wordlessly tweeted the link to his Facebook rant, which I think sums up how we feel about him up in the Great White North.

To anyone that hasn't had the opportunity to directly observe his douchebaggery, which goes for me and her, the concept of its existence seems absurd (she's only Taylor Swift's age, and it was a few years ago that she was on Q, so she seems to have fortunately not been in his preferred 25-40 age range).

As much of a consensus as it is that these allegations among others are all true, it's really hard to hear. The guy definitely was beloved.

I certainly understand that what is distorting this slightly is that there is an "insider" view which differs considerably from the "outsider" one.

Having read the Toronto Star report on this story, where they did the interviews with the women involved, what bothered me (among other things) was that the woman who quit her job after allegedly being grabbed and harassed by Ghomeshi at the CBC.

      http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/20…

She went to the producer, the union steward, her representative in the workplace, who told her it was her responsibility to change a toxic work environment. Huh? So much for supporting a worker against sexual harassment.

Also Ghomeshi is a union employee. He can't sue the CBC but the law firm he has employed will sure take his money — as much of it as they can get. It has to go through the union grievance and arbitration process first.

The Canadian Media Guild has a big case on their hands and we all know unions don't like to pay their lawyers for cases they can't win.

I hope this woman who worked for the CBC realizes she still has a case — at the Ontario Labour Board against the CMG for failing to protect her rights. No time limits on OLRB cases, so if anyone knows her tell her this.

This is a case Ghomeshi can't win. $50 mil because he's an alleged rapist who likes physically violent sex with women? I'm disgusted.

What I find even more pathetic is that it's clear that someone like this can't have a real relationship based on healthy touch, trust, intimacy and authenticity. They have to play these stupid power games for thrills. Yeah choking and punching really gets me off (not!)

I was sickened reading his Facebook post, what he is saying has no credibility. He just sounded like an egotistical creep. Setting up dates with fans on Facebook? It's an abuse of his power.

And by putting his long blathering post on Facebook he has just given the CBC more legal evidence it needs to win this case: obviously he is not smart enough to know when to shut the &*^% up.

Pet peeve, but NPR is not the same as public radio. You listen to your local public radio station, which carries some shows produced or distributed by NPR... or PRI, or themselves, or another station. For example, I'm pretty sure This American Life, which was produced by WBEZ in Chicago and distributed by PRI, is now still technically produced by BEZ, even though it's actually made in New York now, but is self-distributed.

Local stations have to PAY for content from NPR and other distributors.

There is no single national network. Nashville's public radio station can choose to air nothing from NPR, and Spokane's can choose to air nothing but. Stations are independent.
