Boy I have to disagree strongly with this article. Only because there has always been a women's market for workout gear (well since the 80s at least when aerobics hit the scene). AND Nike has always been involved with women's workout gear. True, the colors have gotten more varied and there are more options but women's gear has long existed.

I don't think we actually disagree. Of course there's been a women's market for some time, but now certain companies are expanding their range.

They should hire the dick-shaped running map chick as a spokesmodel.

It's not that they are just realizing women need workout clothes. Nike (and others) have made great workout gear for women for a long time. More companies are getting in on it because it's a fashion trend these days—activewear is being worn as day and weekend wear by women everywhere (not just fitness enthusiasts). That's where the market growth is coming from. "Leggings are the new jeans," said a Nike exec at this event.

Activewear is all over the place in fashion: Adidas and Raf Simons, Chanel doing track suits and sneakers (show in a Chanel supermarket), Alexander Wang's H&M collection, This season's dressy sweatpants! Nike wants a piece of that pie, too.

      ???

I figured that "exercise clothing" was already a market dominated by women. I mean "shorts from Wal-Mart and a sleeveless shirt" seems to be what every dude I know (who works) out wears anyway.

Is there like an island of workout bros who are just buying Under Armour and wear nothing else?

The one time I allowed myself to buy Nike running shoes (which I had been avoiding due to their ubiquity), the damn laces kept getting untied even after I double-knotted them. And I'm not the only person who has had that problem. Haven't had that problem with any other brand of running shoes.

Now Nike wants me to buy their workout clothes?

What's funny about this (or sad) is that Knight is on record admitting they blew this back in the 80s when Reebok totally owned this market.
