Lets put everyone from Portland, Oregon under quarantine because someone from Portland, Maine coughed.

    Because fuck you, Gerardus Mercator.

This doesn't surprise me at all. In my school district the only students who learned the geography of other countries were the AP/IB students.

only those students are deemed worthy of knowing the truth?

That's so many kinds of messed up. My school had an (unfortunately optional) social sciences class that began with memorizing the locations and names of every country and major body of water in the world, by continent, to be tested in a weekly quiz. Some people might think it's a waste of time, but I refuse to acknowledge anyone who condones ignorance of basic geography. /snob

I'm not sure why they weren't teaching everyone geography. I think all they taught was US states and their capitals.

I can get behind that. People should at least have a general idea of where things are.

A school in my state of Maine put a teacher on leave for 21 days(paid, at least) because she traveled to Dallas for a seminar. NOT Africa, NOT the hospital in Dallas, JUST DALLAS.

In the school district's, the annual Dallas Spit Swapping Convention could not have been more poorly timed.

Is this really surprising? I had two people try and convince me that Ebola is being orchestrated to regulate population control.

I know a dude who seems to ACTUALLY THINK that Ebola is a plot by the President (because African) to declare martial law and swear in illegal immigrants as federal marshals. For reasons. Primarily racist ones, I'm guessing.

The ironic thing is that we, in Nigeria, or indeed the rest of the world, are the ones that should be scared of you. The dude who knowingly brought Ebola to Nigeria in the first place was an American, there is now officially more Ebola in America than there is in many other African countries and you guys appear to not be managing quarantines and protecting health care workers all that well.

I am really bad at geography, though not stupid enough to assume that Africa is one country. Can I also get a version of that slide-show that just teaches me the maps? I had a Geosafari with a European countries quiz card. An Africa version of that would suffice.

Ebola Panic Really Shows How Clueless Folks Most Americans Are About African Geography Pretty Much Everything

I say this as an American. We have information on everything at our fingertips, but we're too goddamn lazy to learn anything that's more complicated than a Buzzfeed listicle.

hey, i agree that americans are sucky at geography, but certainly we aren't the only ones. from what i've seen so far, the taiwanese could really use some work in geographical knowledge. and one of the most memorable moments of geographic stupidity was when i was talking to a south african about when i was living in kigali, rwanda, and they said "isn't rwanda part of zimbabwe now?" and i was like"...um no, they are thousands of kilometers apart, rwanda is near burundi and kenya. they've never been part of the same country or government." and she still took some convincing. i mean, i think it's a bit crazy to expect all africans to know everything about all of africa, as it is huge and there are lots of countries, but zimbabwe shares a border with south africa. it'd be like an american thinking canada and panama united.

were you an Expat living in Africa or are you native to the country? You are correct about Americans not being alone in ignorance, but I feel that with all the advantages many of us have, there are fewer excuses for basic gaps in our collective knowledge.
