  I don't know; I had so many friends who cut out anything that could get them in trouble when they started nursing school or whatever at 22 that, while I get wanting to do drugs, I don't have a ton of sympathy for people who enter a career path that is notorious for being serious about drug testing, then do drugs anyway.

He's insanely lucky simply to get an administrative discharge. Unfairly lucky, to be honest - any enlisted, and most JOs w/o that family connection, would face a dishonourable discharge at best, or brig time before a DD at worst.

  Na, most discharged just for testing positive for drugs are administratively discharged. There are five different discharge categories. Administrative discharges include Honorable, General, and Other Than Honorable. Usually, you'll get a General or Other than Honorable for drugs. I doubt he got an Honorable, though I have seen that happen. To get a punitive discharges, a Bad Conduct or a Dishonorable, you have to do something pretty serious. Dishonorable is like for sex crimes, murder, and for stuff like desertion.
