What he said about child porn defendants is crazy, but I gotta note he's done a lot of work for innocence projects and legal aid funds. I saw him at an event in Charlottesville headlining an event for a really good organization that works on prison litigation. He ain't anywhere near perfect, that's for sure (he made a few self-centered jokes at the benefit) but before now he has done decent things as far as visibility goes.

And read New Jim Crow now!! Then become a public defender.

Yes, I mean, sure. He can pay off this bad PR event in monetary donations, etc. That said, being on the boards of these things is not quite the same as being able to hold forth intelligently on the issues. As he demonstrates, amply, here.

It's pretty nuts that he appeared at that thing and did so much work in those organizations and remains this delusional. This was at least back in 2009 and before that he'd written An Innocent Man (about white people). It's disappointing he doesn't understand. Shows how long it's been since he's actually practiced law.

Side note, I interned in a federal public defenders' office and the sentences for possession are definitely very long, which may need looking at. But there's no way those people come upon it accidentally. There's a whole sick network of traders.

He's pretending not to know much about porn either if he thinks 16-year-olds who look like they're 30 is a thing.

That interview mostly reminded me of a real dumbass version of the thoughtful and super difficult to read piece Cord Jefferson did on pedophilia and how we engage pedophiles as a culture.

    But Jesus, Grisham. Project more.

"It happened to a friend of mine from law school."

Someone needs to cross reference an actual list of males he went to law school with against a list of child porn convictions, to figure out if this mythical "friend" actually exists..

I love how he excuses the fact that his friend searched for 16yo girls by qualifying it with "they looked 30."

Recommending this book is an excellent response to Grisham's ridiculous remarks. I think a lot of us get angry at the remarks, and then move on. The book continues the true conversation—and the one we should be having until we can bring about change.

So....did he suddenly forget that not more then a couple months ago that the press found out about thousands of teenage girls that were systematically abused and raped over the years and the authorities were found to largely ignore the problem? In England? Where the Telegraph he is interviewing for is based?

I wonder how many of his 'friends' jacked off to images those girls may have been forced into and put online? But hey, it doesn't hurt anyone....

To be honest, unless you were really paying attention to UK news, that was a minor blip on the US news cycle. If you asked the average American about that or the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal, no one would know what you're talking about.
