    Oh, no! Not the old white men! We have surely gone too far if old white men are going to jail.

    Meanwhile people still go to jail for marijuana violations in many states.

      Yes. And young men stillo go to jail for having nude pictures of their underage sweethearts and lovers. What madness ! Satanic child hunts and murders plus torture go unpunished - but consqeuence free peeking is dire. Not so much.

      The law needs to function to useful and doable goals - not waste energy in Mission Impossible. It is also punishment without purpose - allegedly to 'deter' natural drives and harass harmless activity ; as crazy as the 'Drug Wars' which are also promoting lies about the dangers. People are violent from drinking - but that is legal. Using a healing plant which is not even a narcotic ? Jail them and throw away the key !

    There is so much bad advice on here, and so much misleading information about child exploitation, I'm just going to say a few things as a beat-down prosecutor of this stuff:

    1) Just from reading Grisham's tale, here's my guess on what happened: The RCMP launched a sting. This was more common few years ago, so I'm guess it was in the mid-late 2000s. During that sting, they collected IPs, identities of those seeking out young children, whether it be for actual physical sex or offering to pay/request for production of images. I've never heard of such a passive "sting" as Grisham describes, so I think he's blurring the facts.

    The RCMP gets a warrant, goes to the physical location, seizes the hardware. If there are images on there (and there always are!) - he's in big trouble. And who knows, maybe they got him for attempt to produce, purchasing, if it was for live performances.

    2) There cases are fairly easy to prosecute and authenticate. Possession, for example, is a crime. So like above - we get a warrant, do a knock & talk, seize your hardware, it contains illegal images - you're toast. Yes, many suspects plea, because they're guilty, embarrassed, spouses start divorce proceedings, money to mount defenses isn't available - lots of reasons. And when caught, offenders usually are found with multiple hard drives of thousands upon thousands of gigs of images. The "sympathy" here for men not knowing the age of the victims is misplaced.

    3) This "16 yr old" excuse - all men use it. I guarantee his friend got caught with some disgusting stuff. Most child pornography involves toddlers, recently there is an upswing in BABIES, children no human could ever confuse with a 16 year old. But again, every suspect arrested posits this defense. It's as common as drunk drivers claiming they only had 2 beers when blowing double the limit.

    4)This is a very serious crime with very serious consequences, and having never been involved with any child victims, it's clear the audience here really doesn't understand the depth of violence and coercion and abuse these children endure. Flip comments are really gross. The good news is that so much work has been done globally to help identify victims, that more kids are being helped out of this life, more creeps are being prosecuted.

      As someone who's father possessed sexual images of her when I was a child, I thank you for bringing validation with your words.

      The 'victimless' crime angle is absolutely infuriating to those of us who've ever been in front of a camera in ways I care not to describe here. It is a sickening, nauseating feeling that will NEVER leave me until the day I leave this earth. To this day, I still do not know where some of those still photos may have ended up and the thought that anyone could view them even now, 40 years later, brings on suicidal ideations for me.

      Thank you again for making sense for so many who seem to not understand... you don't have to physically rape or molest a child in order to sexually abuse them.

      Thanks you for this information. The only thing that bothers me about your post- and this may be a euphemism you've absorbed from your work- but I can't imagine victims being cool with the descriptor "live performances" for child rapes.

    It's come to this. The newly admitted young attorney about to make his closing argument in the trial of the decade. The entire nation has been enraptured by this case, fixing their collective gaze on this small southern town.

    The court artist furiously sketches the attorney's look of determination as he steps up to the lectern. "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," he begins with his slight southern drawl, pausing to nod to each of them individually. "My client is a 60 year old white man." The courtroom is silent, waiting for his next words. "And...he was drunk."

    The courtroom goes insane. The judge pounds his gavel, trying to restore order, trying to make himself heard above the jury's cries of "Not guilty." Tears stream down the cheeks of the bailiff as the gallery lines up to give the attorney high fives.

    When the noise finally dies down, the young attorney southernly looks up at the judge and says "That defense should be illegal." The judge grins with a twinkle in his eye. "Son, I invented it."

    A friend of mine, ten years ago, was being a dude. And dudes do dude stuff. Like search for 16-year-old girls after drinking. Do you not search for 16-year-old girls after pounding back a few tall boys? Metaphorical tall boys I mean. Not real ones. I could see how you could get confused because that sounded very un-dude like. Just to be clear, I'm not into pounding tall boys. Or short boys either. I mean, I was talking about my friend. My friend's not into these things. Well I'm not into pounding tall boys either I suppose, I only like girls. When I've been drinking. I mean this friend of mine, not me, last night, I mean, ten years ago, was searching for girls and that's wrong, but what was really stupid was that he didn't take the correct precautions not to get caught for searching for girls while drunk. I'm a practicing attorney, did I mention that? I have a family and a career and hypothetically if I did this, I would have taken the correct precautions. Because dudes who are thinking correctly take precautions. Long story short, last night I destroyed my hard drive.
