Let me see if I understand this. This writer is ostensibly trying to present her positively, yet describes her as "earnest as quinoa?" I get that the writer is probably trying to be clever, but "earnest as quinoa?" Earnest as quinoa. That phrase is going to rattle around in my brain for at least the next for days....

Earnest as quinoa? Nope. I have no idea what that means.

If you're curious about the spread that accompanies the article, the idea was thought up by George Lois (who collaborated with Hathaway) and shot by Alexi Lubomirski.

"So some people don't like you, right?" Lois asks. "Yep," she replies.

After reading the full article, I find that I dislike the writer more than Hathaway (though I never really had a problem with her to begin with).

It's possible I could also just be judgey because she compared a human being to quinoa without sarcasm (I assume?), so what the fuck do I know.

The Harpers Bazaar article sounds like it had absolutely no content editing. Seriously, "as earnest as quinoa"? That's a terrible fucking simile. But other than that, I don't really feel like it's really a bad idea - that we shouldn't hate an actress for not being a "Cool Girl"; that Hathaway has had some falters (that she readily admits to), but that doesn't mean that she deserves to be shunned by the general public or the industry. That we, as a society, expect basically perfection from these women, and when they inevitably can't give us that we treat them like they harmed us personally. She's awkward when giving speeches. She wore a dress that wasn't particularly flattering that one time. She's overly analytic in a way that she's unable to hide easily. And somehow, for this, she's hated? Not disliked, not kind of looked down upon, but hated? That's a huge problem.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I understand disliking celebrities who are actively obnoxious, but I find it weird that people just randomly hate someone like Anne Hathaway, who is as innocuous as barley.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I really dislike Justin Bieber because he keeps doing dick things and putting people in danger and seems to have absolutely no sense of responsibility or remorse (also he will never be forgiven for stepping on the Blackhawks head in the Chi locker room). But to hate someone for no reason other than that she gave an awkward speech that seemed disingenuous that one time is crazy to me.

I'm going to compare other celebrities to grains:

Liv Tyler is as kind as oats
Matt Damon is as affable as sesame seeds
Like wheat, Gwyneth Paltrow causes a certain percentage of the population to experience severe gastrointestinal distress

Hahaha. The Gwyneth Paltrow comparison is spot on.

Jennifer Lawrence is as "in vogue" as chia seeds.

Since I'm generally annoyed at how we build these actresses up and then dispose of them for no reason other than than a mixture of boredom and fashion, I can't snark the interview.

Frankly, I'm more WTF about this write up of the article - is it critiquing the author for a shitty profile or Hathaway for her 'annoying' responses about her Oscar speech or being too much of a method actor as Fantine? I'm a second away from going Chris Crocker on people to leave Anne the fuck alone.

As someone who regularly says dumb things in social situations, I actually feel like I kind of get Anne Hathaway. She's certainly more relateable to me than Jennifer Lawrence, who for some reason everyone thinks is just so very relatable. Who hasn't felt like all kinds of people hate them at stages in their lives? She actually has some pretty concrete reasons to say/believe something like that. I can't hate her. Or dislike her at all.

I find my patience for famous folks dwindles proportionally to the amount of time they spend discussing their personal histories of bullying.

I'm sure it sucks to read terrible things about yourself online. It sucks to read my teaching evals. It sucks to get performance reviews. It sucks to do a lot of things.

Can we go back to taking about your pet issues, or maybe the movies you're in? Please?

I feel pretty strongly that an internet full of anonymous people yelling that they hate you because of vaguely specified reasons that rarely even bring up your acting ability =/= performance reviews. And actually, if I'd ever had a boss who said anything in one of my evals like people say about Hathaway every single day, I'd be stunned and horrified, because that is not actually Management Best Practices.

But whatever, she's rich, so she doesn't get to have any reaction to it, right?

What's everyone's problem with Anne Hathaway? This isn't rhetorical. What is it? Does she not have enough of that contrived J-Law "I just fart and eat pizza in my sweatpants whenever I'm not being nominated for Oscars" vibe? Is Hathaway harder to shoehorn into your "pretend best friend" fantasies cos she looks like she gets her hair done professionally and has read a few chapter books? So lame.

It's incredibly fucking lame. The one I hate is "too actressy and fake." She is an actress. If she seems actress-y, and like a theater kid, that sounds like the opposite of fake to me. Now, if she starts acting all "accountant-y,' then I might think that was a little fake. ;)
