It's probably just be a stunt before the official format change, which is a pretty typical tactic. When I worked in radio we did this a few times. Once we flipped a format and for three days the station was a dogs-only theme. We only played dog-themed music, ran "ads" for bones and dog parks, and even had a fake website. Honestly that was the greatest radio station in history.

That's definitely what it is. A local station out here changed formatting a few months ago, and they played "Hot in Herre" by Nelly for three straight days.

Oh Christ, I remember that. I swear one of the days I would scan at different periods throughout the day and it would stop on the same part of the song every time. It was kinda eerie.

Don't worry about the programming schedule, there are lots of ways to fill the time.

    - 5-6 PM Talkin' Bout Beyonce

    - 6-9 AM Dr. Bey and the Weasel in the Morning

    - Halloween All-Day: The Beyoncé Seancé

    And so on.

I would buy tickets to a Beyoncé Seancé. (A Seyoncé?)

Because if there is one thing Texas needs, it's less news sources.

Standard operating procedure for 21st century American broadcasting. Local news is the most costly format to run, what with having to pay a staff of skilled human beings to cover and report on things. But running a satellite feed and voice-tracking "local" shows can be wrung out of part-time board operators who are worked right up to the threshold of being eligible for benefits - but never over.

In one particular dynastic broadcast company (owned and operated run by a couple of billionaires), this is called "doing more with less." Oh, how they love that phrase.

I think Houston still has a public station - Houston Public Media News 88.7... It's an NPR affiliate station and broadcasts plenty of news....

Agreed. There are also at least two AM stations that call their format News/Talk. In fact, that's normally where all news radio stations live. I think this might be a non-story decorated as a crap-on-Texas-again story.

It also does shows like This American Life and America's Test Kitchen, yada yada. So it's talk, but not all news. At least that's my take on it.

It's called a program flip. It's a way to whip up publicity for a format change.
Radio One knows what it's going to do with the station; they want everyone paying attention before they announce the programming and the lineup. So, I'm sure they're saying thank you for the help here. Signed, someone with 20 years experience in radio.

13 hours of Bey music, 10 hours of commercials a day, 1 hour a day of explanation how her perfume smells.
