I'm not usually one to complain about magazine covers, but my god, the expressiveness of Farrow's shot! Beside her, Swift looks blank, like any emotion has been air-brushed away.

Would have been cool if they'd gotten an actual female actor for this edition.

Swift's basically been photoshopped into an hollow, meaningless arrangement of pixels, but even with that, I'm kinda jazzed about the concept for the photo. It's such a goddamn giddy pleasure to see a magazine photo shoot reference an actress that isn't Marilyn Monroe or Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn.

I wish we saw more homages to interesting actresses like Farrow. I wish Barbara Stanwyck and Jane Russell and Dorothy Dandridge and Gloria Grahame and Clara Bow and Anna May Wong got more play as pop-culture touchstones. And more than anything, I wish somebody would tip their hat to Marlene Dietrich in all her gorgeous, glowing butterfly lighting. Oh, I'd give a lot to see what, say, Nicole Beharie could do with Shanghai Lily.

Who else should be revived as a go-to photo shoot reference?

What about Veronica Lake? I feel like Blake Lively was born to channel Veronica Lake for a fashion editorial, don't you?

Love this idea. The resemblance is actually kind of uncanny.

I think Mia today could do a better Daisy than Taylor. She'd have to cut that godamm hair of her's but that's just gravy.

They'd need to recast Gatsby. Lordy, what a dull Gatsby Redford was. (Best part of that movie is Bruce Dern as Tom, to me.)

Taylor Swift looks like she's trying hard not to get lipstick on the pearls in the newstand cover. So awkward.

I like the newsstand cover better! You can see that she's lifting her eyebrows (and you can see the wrinkles in her forehead). Makes her look less robotic.

This is not good. Can't just leave this on Swift's shoulders though. The photographer and the photoshopper and the hairdresser are also to blame.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and blame the photographer. She has kind of a dead expression (direct your subject!) and the lighting is weird.

I'm with you on the hairdresser. Swift's hair just looks flat, while Farrow's has those lovely, classic curls.

And the fifth cover of People Mag was PRESIDENT GERALD FORD IN A SWIMMING POOL

Vice President Ford at that point. Nixon doesn't resign until 8/8/1974 and then Ford cowardly pardons him in September.

This looks a little scary, like an ice queen stepmother villain. The actual newsstand cover looks much lovelier, but more Taylor Swift and less homage.

Something about it still looks really weird.

With Taylor Swift's I'm like "Why does her hand look so big? Why is she biting that necklace? What is she doing?"

There's nothing sensual about it. She looks like my puppy when I catch her biting the furniture.

Also, the colour of her nail polish is bothering me. Who the hell decided a vintage-inspired shoot should involve purple/blue nailpolish?

To see the two covers next to each other like this gives me the heebie-jeebies. It's like being in a haunted house and realizing that the doll you just walked past is now looking directly at you.
