Not only do they dash to his rescue, they usher him up the safer route, carefully steer him away from another potential fall, stop and check him, and then he turns around so that one of the adults (his mother?) can specifically check his wounded tush with her trunk.

I keep trying to even, but I can't.

Wait 'til they have another one. Then they'll be all "You're fine, walk it off. Where'd I put that peanut beer...?"

THIS. The way they responded, all of them, just made my heart so full. Elephant herds are family.

And then I had a sads thinking of how they are being killed by assholes who use their tusks for decoration.

Insert the elephant in the back tilting one corner of the newspaper down and saying "OH STOP SHE'S FINE" and we've got my parents!

I don't think my children even start crying until they are sure someone is running to help them.

When I'm the only one home with them, they fall down, look over at me with their faces simultaneously showing surprise, anger, and pain, see that I have not moved from my previous position, say, "fuck it, never mind", get up off the ground and go back to playing.

Well, they are only two, so they rarely say, "fuck it", but I know that is what they are thinking.

i always think of helicopter parenting as going overboard with it, and i imagine for a species that's 300lbs by age 2, falling any distance and/or landing on your ass is a bigger deal than it would be for us.

One more reason (if anyone needs it) to stop using and abusing elephants for profit and entertainment. ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS.
