So if the court does decide not to grant certiorari in all seven cases...what happens to the lower rulings that are currently stayed? Do they remain stayed, does that become the action that de-stays them, or would it be up to each circuit to re-examine the stay to determine whether or not to continue it?

If SCOTUS doesn't grant cert, the appellate court's decision stands.

I'm not Supreme Court expert but it seems as if the Supremes have been bending over backwards to avoid making any decisions that have big consequences. The landmark Supreme Court decisions we read about in Government class are rare. Even if they do take one or two of these cases I look for them to ultimately find some way to decide that they don't need to decide whether gay marriage will be legal in all 50 states by issuing a very narrow ruling or throwing it back down to a circuit court to retry.

More importantly, what kind of snacks are served at the breaks? Obviously an antipasto platter for Scalia and a crustless mayonnaise sandwich for Alito. Breyer strikes me as the kind of person who would order the "heart healthy" boxed lunch and then eat everyone else's cookies.

I take issue with your assertion that Alito has a crustless mayo sandwich. I have to believe everything he consumes is dry and tasteless. I'm thinking it's turkey with some boring ass cheese like plain gouda (not smoked). And original flavored sun chips (shutter). (Though you are spot on with no crusts.)

in related news, CA governor Jerry Brown banned the" gay panic "defense. ( i can't even believe that this was an actual line of defense ever used in court!) so far as i know, CA is the only state to ban gay panic.
