Every day I see proof that plenty people can't operate cars safely, despite having training, testing, and insurance. Why the hell do these people feel safer when surrounded by the same populace carrying guns?

Die Hard summarized it quite clearly:

Hans Gruber: [on the radio] Mr. Mystery Guest? Are you still there?

John McClane: Yeah, I'm still here. Unless you wanna open the front door for me.

Hans Gruber: Uh, no, I'm afraid not. But, you have me at a loss. You know my name but who are you? Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he's John Wayne? Rambo? Marshal Dillon?

John McClane: Was always kinda partial to Roy Rogers actually. I really like those sequined shirts.

Hans Gruber: Do you really think you have a chance against us, Mr. Cowboy?

      John McClane: Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker.

lol training and testing? DMV here just requires you to drive around the block.

Whew! So much testing there. But hey, high schools have a behind the wheel program. Should they have a behind the gun program too?

When my car is in park, nothing the fault of the car itself happens. If a gun is in a proper holster...then...hmm...

The Car-Gun/Gun-Car comparison is so fucking tiresome, it works for neither side.

I've looked for this, and imagine that it is true-

But does anyone know of a study with hard data that cross-compares civilian injuries by perpetrator and by "good guy with gun?"

I feel like there has to be some data out there that examines what happens when an untrained civilian interferes with a robbery in a crowded place...

It would be impossible to source. You are only going to get news reports and that is going to generate some very flawed data (depending on the slant of the story). Best case scenario the data makes its way into court records because they caught the robber (or charged the patron with something). More likely, guy robs place, a bystander pulls a guy, guy flees and isn't caught then its at best in the police report but that isn't something that can be accessed easily.

I assumed as much. I guess I was hoping that a criminology PhD out there did it for their dissertation.

Another problem would be the "self-reporting" that takes place with police reports. At least here in NY, Crimestat totally fucked up the whole sense of confidence in crime data, because it incentivized cops to repress the real numbers.

I'm a data guy. Just wish there was an objective, standard, national system.

"I think it protects the restaurant. It discourages people from breaking in."

Not quite, burglars usually strike in the after-hours when there's nobody in the goddamn restaurant.

If this business owner follows an anecdotal pattern that I've noticed among gun people with money, this place has never, ever been robbed during business hours, and this is a typical paranoid Louisiana white man who's afraid of black people.

    But you know... anecdotal.

The irony of this statement following the one where you claim to be a "data guy" is palpable.

That's why I qualified it as anecdotal.

I'm looking for data on civilian collateral injury. I welcome having my anecdotal experiences contradicted, as that means that I just got a tiny bit smarter.

"I think it protects the restaurant. It discourages people from breaking in. If they think someone may have a gun and it's concealed, you'll think twice about coming in and robbing somebody."

A thief wouldn't have to break in if the gun-toters were present, because, well, the store would be open. Logic. These guys have it in spades.

Cox first started offering this deal to police officers who visited his restaurant, but recently extended the discount to all his customers who come in packing heat.

LOL. Yup, pretty much the exact same thing, amirite?

Cops in any city with real crime sure would love this....

Discount applies to people of colour and muslims too, I'm assuming?

Also, does he check permits to give out the discount - or just showing your gun is good enough?

"Wow that sign says it gives discounts to people with guns. I had better not rob the store after hours when everyone is gone"

            Said no crackhead ever.
