I will never understand the absolute disdain for black people so many assholes have. WHAT. IS. YOUR. FUCKING. PROBLEM.

    Why??

The past few days FKA Twigs' social media accounts have been flamed by people who are absolutely enraged that Robert Pattinson is dating her because she's black! Racist slurs left and right. The biggest outrage is that Rob chose a black woman! Why, people?? It makes me want to cry. (Btw, Jezebel needs to make a story on this. It is ridiculous).

Pattison's the Twilight guy right? I'd imagine that any woman dating him is going to catch the nasty part of his obsessed fan base. The fact that she's black usually only means that the insults can easily be that much more specific.

On that topic, are there any specific insults for white people? I know of cracker, honky, and turkey (jive turkey?), but I don't really feel like those were used outside of 70's movies and episodes of Sanford and Son.

Aaron McGruder's Boondocks introduced me to the racist stereotype that white people love cheese. While this stereotype has the virtues of being both funny and true, I don't see how it's at all a negative. Perhaps someone more creative than me could turn it into one.

I'm not sure whether eating chicken with utensils and laughing when you cut someone off on the highway are stereotypes about white people in general, or about white Yankees specifically, but feel free to use those as well.

She was the female lead in Jerry Maguire, she won an Oscar for Cold Mountain, she wears a lot of Carolina Herrera, was briefly married to ... Kenny Chesney, I think? And is from Texas.

Oh, and she was the film version of Bridget Jones.

They took a quote from (probably) the only thing they had seen her in and didn't realize the shit they were stepping in.

These feel more lazy and ignorant than racist. And - Yes, I know there is plenty of ignorance in racism.

I tend to reserve my outrage for straight up malice, not stupidity. Life's too short to be hatin all the time.

Seeeeeriously. Every time I see Viola Davis I think of that line. Just like every time I see Brad Pitt I say "WHAT'S IN THE BOXXXX".

It is a line from a movie that I remember and I attribute to an actor. THE END.

The hair tweet, I'm sure, was literally just about hair. Intentionally offensive? No way. Ignorant? Maybe. Unaware? Yea.

Isn't that her most famous line from her most famous movie? That line was everywhere when that movie came out. Does she have another iconic line that most viewers would know? (serious.)

      The hair statement was wrong.

in all fairness, i thought the same about the hair...though from a different angle. i was actually *sad* that they didn't leave olivia's hair curly. i know it's a wig, yadda yadda yadda, but it would be really nice to see a black woman in a starring role with curly hair. viola davis, for example, wears her hair natural off-screen, and it would have been great if they left it that way for her role. PLENTY of black female professors wear their hair natural (pretty much all of those i have encountered in history, sociology, and other social science/humanities fields around the globe rock twas, curly fros, braids, twists, and dreads...so i mean...not that uncommon!)

I agree about Viola. But, considering the specifics of the Annalise character, it makes sense they'd opt against natural hair. I'm sure it's often true that women with natural hair are taken less seriously (because people are terrible) and as the most cut-throat of lawyers she must make the most efficient decisions. Not that it makes it better. But I think is does say something about the character.

I liked the curly hair too (and I assumed the idea was the remoteness of the locale made flat-irons impossible), but it would've been nice if Olivia'd had something actually resembling Kerry's kinky-curly natural hair. That scene reminded me of Sanaa's "transformation" in Something New, interestingly enough.

It would seem that on Jezebel, of all places, those who "don't get it" would also realize that their getting "it" is not a requirement. It doesn't affect the validity, seriousness, or importance of the issue for others. It's like me minimizing my family/SO/friend's fear and aversions because I find them silly. Don't you hate it when you express something deep, stressful and/or painful to a loved one and they dismiss your concerns outright? Maybe think about that the next time you "don't get it" and treat the matter as you would like to be treated if the situation was reversed.

I don't watch Scandal so I wouldn't even care about that tweet to begin with. On top of that the Viola Davis one is a reach. It's one of her most famous roles and she got nominated for an OSCAR doing it...which is amazing and should be brought to light because Hollywood does have a color problem and it's more rare for a woman to get an Oscar. Besides that that line was fucking awesome in that movie and showed how black women during that time were actually more honorable and nice than the white women at the time and I don't see anything wrong with that. Jezebel is reaching on that one. Sorry I just get pissed when you call out racism for a very clearly famous line of dialogue said by an amazing actress who happens to be on what I hope is an awesome tv show now. It's not 10pm here so I haven't watched it yet, but I will. :P

I don't have much problem with either of the tweets, I probably would have made similar posts. As for Kerry's hair comment, it's what I thought too. And really we haven't seen Olivia Pope doing business without a certain look or demeanor. I'm sure sentiments have been made about white characters like this too. I'm not hitting the streets and wearing a sandwich board over this one.

As for the Viola Davis comment, it's glib to be sure but it's her most famous role to date. Sad to say, neither tweet offended me—and some of the ones most offended live to be offended on Twitter.
