I couldn't finish the book. I hated all the characters: Not enough to be willing to read all the way to find out what happened, but enough to Wiki the book after the fact. I suspect it will make a movie I will be willing to Netflix one day.

I DO like Rosamund Pike, though.

But that's the best part of the book, hating every single character. I cannot remember another book that filled me with so much loathing for so many people, I had to read to the end just because you want to make sure that nothing good happens to any of them. I think it's a special skill as a writer to be able to write detestable main characters, who are still compelling enough for you to want to read about.

I hear that's Flynn's M.O., writing these really unlikeable characters. I haven't read the book (and probably won't) but I'll also wait and see if the movie is worthy of an eventual late-night Netflix splurge.

I don't like some of the casting for the movie. NPH as Desi? When Nick meets Desi, he feels jealous of his appearance. I don't see too many guys looking at NPH and thinking that.

Oh God, I think NPH is PERFECT for Desi. He looks so wholesome, like no one would ever expect him to secretly be a psychopath, but then also looks just a bit creepy, so once it's revealed that he is a psychopath, no one is that surprised.

He doesn't read as Desi to me either! But I have endless faith in NPH and I bet I come out of the theatre impressed.

She's the right ageish, Ben Affleck is too old to play her younger husband.

She's not old enough! Amy's supposed to be pushing 40, while Nick's in his early 30s. I'm still interested in this movie, but ignoring that in favor of a more typical Hollywood age dynamic bugs me.

FYI, they're also streaming Reznor and Ross's soundtrack on NPR Music. Thumbs up.

Thanks for this. Listening to this will be my new noise cancelling method at work. It is a bit disquieting though, I'm sure I'll be having a few 'Shining' moments by the end of the day. All work and no play, you know.

It's good background music if you don't mind the implication that your day will turn sinister. It really kicked my laundry folding up to another level.

Do I need to read this book? Why or why not?

I do like mysteries. I do like guessing what's really going on. I can only handle unlikeable people so much. Tell me that the worst people don't like, hit the lottery and get elected POTUS.

(Already saw the comments about unlikeable characters and unreliable narrators so I'm up to speed on that.)

The book was fantastic until the second half and then I was so disappointed I barely finished it. I hated every single one of the characters.

I read this book and thought it was meh. You go into it expecting twists and you get them, but you always know they're coming so they lose some of their impact. The characters are all assholes. And I don't feel like you get a true sense of what motivates them. They just DO stuff. I personally think you'd be fine just watching the movie if you're interested in it.

I don't get excited about movies, especially movies from books.

That being said, AAAAAAAAAAH!!!! This one is marked on my calendar.

I hate myself, but I'm so excited!

That's EXACTLY how I feel. I felt very violent when I finished the book (HATED the ending), but as time has gone on I think it was the most perfect ending for these characters. I am very excite about the fillum mainly because of Rosamund Pike.

I was not crazy about the book (can't stand Gillian Flynn's writing style) but the more I see of the movie, the more interesting it looks. Also, I love Rosamund Pike. I'll be checking this out.

I haven't read the book but know the basic plot so I ask this with genuine curiosity- is there any justifiable or believable motivation for what the wife does?

no, she's crazy. But SHE believes she's justified in her actions, which is chilling. How far she goes? Thankfully, I don't think I know anyone in real life would do what she does. If I know any psychopaths, I don't know it (yet).

why did everyone hate the book ending? It left me shaking.....and terrified. So far as entertaining literature, I thought it was a kick-ass ending. I loved that they were still on that merry-go-round of payback and crazy.

I hated the ending, but also, made peace with it. It may be a very realistic one. Crazy, dramatic people deserve and end up with each other.

Fincher on this novel? Jesus, I can't wait. That ending is going to fuck people who haven't read the novel up .
