You should not have train someone to act like an adult.

They aren't teaching people how not to rape. If you're that kind of person by the time you get to college you're probable SOL in the humanity department. It is a bystander program to teach already decent people how to prevent or stop the shitty behavior of others.

That works on a bumper sticker level but Freshmen are 17 or 18. Training them to be adults is basically what the University experience is.

Honestly, with us, it was really no more complicated then seeing if someone got along with most of us and was a relatively decent person. 90% of Fraternities are hungry for dues paying members.

Honestly, the only criteria for picking who we'd ask to pledge was "Is this guy a decent guy?" (I.e. Was he a known asshole, seem like a risk, disrespectful in general, flashy if he was rich [We had plenty of non-rich dudes] , doing a ton of drugs), "Is this a guy you'd want to have a meal/beer/social interaction with?", and "Is he only here for networking?" (One of the perks of being a really old fraternity was a vast network for networking or something, I don't know I don't network.)

We generally ended up with a decent group of people, and I think the largest incident we had in my time undergrad is that one dude broke another's air conditioner.

While it's great that these schools/frats are finally doing SOMETHING about sexual assaults, they need to back up education with zero-tolerance punishments. The military has mandatory anti-hazing and anti-sexual assault classes for all personnel. If you're caught hazing you can expect to lose pay/rank, so hazing incidents are much less common than they were 2 decades ago. Their sexual assault campaign, however, hasn't been as successful because offenders are much less likely to face any consequences, so numbers are spiking. Without serious consequences, it just becomes an "lol eye roll oh god gotta sit through this stupid class" thing that no one takes seriously.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a great thing, though.

Zero tolerance hasn't been shown to be particularly effective with pretty much all the other stuff it's been applied to; it generally makes the issue worse. Plus, research shows that one of the reasons that students are afraid to intervene is because they fear getting someone in too much trouble.

That's a fair point. The military punishes anyone who is even aware of a hazing incident and doesn't report it, which leads to people intervening because THEY don't want to get in trouble for being complicit. I can see this not really working as well in a college environment, where there aren't eyes everywhere looking for trouble.

Well, it's nice to see my fraternity mentioned and not have it being in the context of an active sexually assaulting a person or burning down a building.

my main impression of TKE in school was "oh yeah, a girl in my dorm had her drink pissed in at their party freshman year" so there's that too. M I Z!

What if we just issue all the frats with liquor licenses and govern they with the same rules as bars?

Very happy to see my own Fraternity among the 8. My experiences were just about a complete 180 from what typically gets described here as the fraternity experience but I know that was just one chapter at one school for one stretch of time and I've certainly met some guys from other chapters who had different experiences(although no horror stories to date).

I don't necessarily think that there's anything in Greek culture that doesn't exist in the wider campus culture but being as it's a positive step regardless, I don't really care where it comes from or why.

I've taught groups of guys this kind of stuff as a clinician. It's all about teaching people how to have good lives, how to value consent and mutuality and how to respect other people. There is a lot of empirical evidence about certain treatment models that have been effective in reducing the reoffenses of high risk teens and adults. Don't we owe it to all of us to really promote something that is effective rather than focus on whether it should be taught?

I mean, don't ask me. I just want rapes reduced. I'm not going to think a ton about whether they should have be taught this—if it works, it works.

I'm working very hard to put my skepticism on the shelf, because, even if this initiative is only marginally successful, it's a step in the right direction. That can only be good.

Lesson One: Don't rape. Lesson Two: If you see a rape in progress, try and stop it. Even consider calling the cops.

...or, call the cops, because it's a violent crime and if you don't you're part of the problem.

Oh, agreed, but if we're dealing with folks that need to be told "Rape is bad, m'kay?" then we're going to have to work up to that next step...

Will there also be training in how not to murder someone? What about training in how not to steal things. Why do they need special training in how not to be criminals. How about don't do crimes, assholes?

Kids are told at home, school, and/or in church that they shouldn't kill, steal, etc etc. Kids are never told not to rape. Rape isn't talked about. And clearly, the parameters by what is considered rape are hotly debated ALL the time even though there is a right answer: lack of affirmative consent. So what's the harm in a training course? Why you gotta be cynical? They're trying to DO something about it. I'm not asking you to be grateful, but at least be supportive because it might actually prevent assaults.
