      But lets not kid ourselves, 'Syria' as we know it consists of only the area in red. This bombing campaign is more of an acknowledgement by all parties (including the Assad government which has yet to retaliate) that the imaginary lines drawn up by the British more than a century ago are simply no longer relevant in this day and age.

      Even if IS gets wiped out tomorrow there is likely going to be a vicious land grab by the remaining parties that could very well spiral into yet another protracted conflict. This isnt going to end anytime soon.

      1) Random maps found on the internet are not evidence that the sovereign country of Syria ceases to exist or that it's borders should not be respected.

      2) Assad not "retaliating" (whatever that means exactly) within hours of a bombing campaign is not evidence of a bombing campaign's legal or moral justification. This is a logic more or less discredited in the 1980s when the courts overturned Shrink Wrap Contracts.

      3) The whole "lol these borders were drawn up by Western Powers after WWI therefor Western Powers can ignore them" is colonial, psychopathic nonsense.

      4) "IS" can't get wiped out anymore than al Qaeda can get "wiped out" (remember them) because these aren't real organizations with command structures and a defined set of goals like the cartoon the media has been portraying. "IS", as far as the US military defines them, is a nebulous and loose confederacy of Sunni elements - some of whom are crazy religious shitstains and some of whom are entirely legitimate anti-colonial actors resisting the arbitrary rule of Western powers and their corrupt puppet dictators. We can't "destroy" them because in no real sense is there a "them" to destroy, the Islamic State, just like al Qaeda, is an idea more than an institution.
